5. Disposal of Ashes

Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a
tight-ttinglid.Theclosedcontainerofashesshould
beplacedonanon-combustibleoororontheground,
wellawayfromallcombustiblematerials,pendingnal
disposal.
Iftheashesaredisposedofbyburialinsoilorotherwise
locally dispersed, they should be retained in the
closedcontaineruntilallcindershavebeenthoroughly
cooled.
6. Cleaning Heat Exchanger Chambers & Drop Tube
• Frequency:Weeklyorevery1tonoffuel

The amount of ash buildup in the repot will be a good
guide to determine how often you should clean the heat
exchangers.
a.Allowtheappliancetocompletelycooldownbefore
pullingthecleaningrods. Turnthethermostatonand
thenimmediatelyofftostarttheexhaustbloweronits
cycletime.Itwillpullyashouttheexhaustinstead
ofintotheroom.
b. Toaccessthecleaningrodsliftthehopperlid.Both
blackbenthandlepullrodsarelocatedclosetothe
faceoftheappliancetotheleftandrightside.
c. To clean, pull the rods straight out until it stops,
approximately 20 inches (508mm). Slide the rods
OUTandINacoupleoftimes.
WARNING
Heatexchangercleaningrodsmaybewarm
tothetouch.Forsafetypurposeswear
gloves.
Donotpullheatexchangercleaningrods
whileapplianceisoperating.
PushcleaningrodsINwhendone,DONOT
leavecleaningrodsOUT.Injurycanoccur.
2. Cleaning Firepot with Cleaning Rod & Firepot
Scraper
• Frequency:Dailyormoreoftenasneeded

a.Be sure the appliance is allowed to cool, has been
unpluggedandtheexhaustblowerisoff.Ifyouare
justcleaningtherepot,thereisnoneedtounplugthe
appliance.
b.PullrepotcleaningrodOUTandINacoupleoftimes
tohelpshakedebrisloose.Ifrodishardtopull,itmay
benecessarytouseyourrepotclean-outtooltochip
awaymaterialthathasbuiltuponthebottomplateof
therepotandtopushoutanyclinkers.Largerclinkers
mayhavetoberemovedfromthetopoftherepot.
Cornclinkerscanbeespeciallydifculttobreakup.
c.The firepot floor plate must be fully closed when
nished.See Figure 28.1 on page 28.
4. Cleaning Ash Pan

Locatetheashpanunderneaththerepotandusinga
slightpullupandoutremovetheashpan.Emptyinto
a non-combustible container and re-install ash pan.

3. Ash Removal from Firebox
• Frequency:Weeklyormorefrequentlydependingon
ashbuild-up.

a.Allowtheappliancetocompletelycooldown.There
must not be any hot ashes in the firebox during
cleaning. Turnthethermostatonandthenimmediately
offtostarttheexhaustbloweronitscycletime.Itwill
pullyashouttheexhaustinsteadofintotheroom.
b.Frequentcleaningof theashinthereboxwillhelp
slowdownthebuild-upofashintheexhaustblower
andventsystem.
c.Opendoor.Removeashwithanashvacuumorwhisk
broomandsmalldustpan.
d.This ash is deposited in the same ash pan as the
repotdebris.Theashpanshouldbeemptiedevery
timeyoucleantherebox.Remembertoplacetheash
anddebrisintoametalornon-combustiblecontainer.
