B. Fire Safety
To provide reasonable re safety, the following should be
givenseriousconsideration:
1. Install at least one smoke detector on each oor of
your home to ensure your safety. They should be
located away from the heating appliance and close
to the sleeping areas. Follow the smoke detector
manufacturer’s placement and installation instructions,
and be sure to maintain regularly.
2. AconvenientlylocatedClassAreextinguisher.
3. Apracticedevacuationplan,consistingofatleasttwo
escape routes.
4. Intheeventofachimneyre:
a. Prepare occupants for immediate evacuation
b. Notifyredepartment
D. Combustible/Non-combustible Materials
• Combustible Material
Material made of or surfaced with wood, compressed
paper, plant bers, plastics, or any material capable
of igniting and burning, whether ame-proofed or not,
plastered or unplastered.
• Non-combustible Material
Materialwhichwillnotigniteandburn.Suchmaterialsare
those consisting entirely of steel, iron, brick,tile, slate,
glass or plasters, or any combination thereof.
Materials that are reported as passingASTM E 136,
Standard Test Method for Behavior of Materials in a
Vertical Tube Furnance at 750
o
C and UL763 shall be
considered non-combustible materials.
• Non-combustible Sealant Material
Sealants which will not ignite and burn: Rutland, Inc.
Fireplace Mortar #63, Rutland 76R, Nuflex 304, GE
RTV106orGERTB116(orequivalent).
E. Seasoned Wood
Burn only dry seasoned wood.
• Storewoodundercover,outoftherainandsnow.
• Dryandwell-seasonedwoodwillnotonlyminimizethe
chance of creosote formation, but will give you the most
efcientre.
• Evendrywoodcontainsatleast15%moisturebyweight,
andshouldbeburnedhotenoughtokeepthechimney
hotforaslongasittakestodrythewoodout-aboutone
hour.
• Itisawasteofenergytoburnunseasonedwoodofany
kind.
Deadwoodlyingontheforestoorshouldbeconsideredwet,
and requires full seasoning time.
• Standingdeadwoodcanbeconsideredtobeabout2/3
seasoned.
• Totellifwoodisdryenoughtoburn,checktheendsof
the logs.
• Iftherearecracksradiatinginalldirectionsfromthecenter,
it is dry.
• Ifyourwoodsizzlesinthere,eventhoughthesurface
is dry, it may not be fully cured.
C. Overring
Donotover-re.
Over-ring may ignite creosote or will damage
the stove and chimney.
Topreventover-ringyourstove,DONOT:
• Useammableliquids
• Overloadwithwood
• Burntrashorlargeamountsofscraplumber
• Permittoomuchairtothere
• Useofprocessedsolidfuelrelogs

• Roaring,rumblingnoises
• Loudcrackingorbangingsounds

• Immediatelyclose the door and air controls to reduce
airsupplytothere.
• Ifyoususpectachimneyre,calltheredepartment
and evacuate your house.
• Contact your local chimney professional and have
your appliance and stove pipe inspected for any dam-
age.
• Donotuseyourapplianceuntilthechimneyprofes-
sional informs you it is safe to do so.
