BMC in the QSSC-S4R server platform
LAN interface
The QSSC-S4R server platform is embedded with the Integrated BMC. The Integrated BMC implements both
the IPMI 1.5 and IPMI 2.0 messaging models. These provide out-of-band local area network (LAN)
communication between BMC and the network.
BMC Embedded LAN Channels
BMC hardware includes two dedicated 10/100 network interfaces:
Interface 1 (LAN1):
This interface is available from the on-board NIC ports in a system, which can be shared
with the host. Only one NIC may be enabled for management traffic at any time.
Interface 2 (LAN3):
This interface is available from RMM3, which is a dedicated management NIC and not
shared with the host.
For these channels, support can be enabled for IPMI-over-LAN and DHCP.
For security reasons, embedded LAN channels have the following default settings:
IP Address: Static
All users disabled
IPMI-enabled network interfaces may not be placed on the same subnet. This includes the RMM3’s on-board
network interface, and the BMC’s embedded network interfaces.
Host-BMC communication over the same physical LAN connection, also known as “loopback”, is not supported.
This includes “ping” operations.
IPMI 2.0 Channel Management
Every messaging interface is assigned an IPMI channel ID by IPMI 2.0. Commands are provided to configure
each channel for privilege levels and access modes. The following table shows the standard channel
assignments.
