Chapter 1: System Description QSSC-S4R Server System Product Guide
Version 1.0

If eight fans are present the fans are in a redundant configuration and by definition hot swappable. A redundant
configuration requires two fans per fan zone (See Figure 9). The default four fans of the Value SKU are NOT hot
swappable. To replace the fans during maintenance in a non-hot swappable configuration the system should be
powered down and all power supply disconnected.
The eight hot swap fan modules that are located at the upper front of the chassis can be removed from the
chassis when the chassis cover is removed (See Figure 8).
The fans are docked on the front panel fan board (FPFB).
The S4R fan modules have following features:
Form factor: 80x80x38mm
Hot swap blind-mate connector
Fan presence, PWM, tachometer, and fault signals
Support Fault LED
Hard Disk Drive Rotational Vibration Isolation
Tool-less service at the module level
Keying feature to prevent incorrect installation
Figure 8. Cooling Fan Locations
Each fan (or pair of redundant fans in series) provides cooling for a zone of the mainboard that includes two
memory riser slots and one CPU socket. Dividers separate the memory risers to allow for proper airflow for each
riser. The zones are designed to be redundant in order to maintain system cooling in the event of fan failure. To
maintain system performance, only one of the eight fans can fail at any one time. See the following figure for a
description of the cooling zones.
