2 Printing In This Chapter . . .
QCOLOR Color Control QCOLOR Color Control To help you optimize color output, QMS developed QCOLOR, which provides automatic or custom color control. QCOLOR dynamically configures the magicolor CX for the best output quality based on the contents of the document and the media it will be printed on. QCOLOR matching capabilities include CIE-based color matching, PANTONE®* Color simulation, and ICC 3.0 and ColorSync support.
QCOLOR Color Control Accessing QCOLOR for Windows 1 If you haven’t already, install the QMS Level 2 Windows driver. See chapter 1, “Connecting the Printer,” for information on installing these drivers. 2 Open or create the file you want to print. 3 From the File menu, choose Print Setup. Some applications may call this option something else, such as Page Setup. 4 In the Print Setup dialog box, make sure the QMS magicolor CX is selected, then choose the Options button.
QCOLOR Color Control n » 2-4 Customize (if you want to customize the color settings by using the options on the Color tab) Note: Because QCOLOR automatically adjusts the Page Element, Halftone, CRD, Color Calibration, Color Model, RGB Strength, and Media Selection, these settings on the Color Setup tab do not have to be adjusted. However, if you want to customize these settings, you can get information about these and other options in the QMS Level 2 Windows driver by choosing the Help button.
QCOLOR Color Control 6 Choose the media type you’re using. For example, if you're printing overhead transparencies, select the Transparency option. Also, make sure you configure the media tray you're using for transparency printing. This can be done through the printer control panel. See “Printing on Different Types of Print Media” on page 23 for more information on media, and see chapter 1, “Printer Configuration,” in the reference guide for information about using the printer’s configuration menu.
QCOLOR Color Control Accessing QCOLOR for a Macintosh with QuickDraw GX Installed » Note: If your Macintosh doesn’t have QuickDraw GX installed, see “Accessing QCOLOR for the Macintosh” on page 8. 1 If you haven’t already, install the QMS GX driver. See “Installing Macintosh Printer Drivers” in chapter 1, “Connecting the Printer,” of the reference guide for information. 2 Open or create the file you want to print.
QCOLOR Color Control n Special (if you want to specify a document type) If you choose Special, then in the Special area, select Graphics (if you're printing color graphics), Grayscale (if you're printing images with gray shades), Photographic (if you're printing photographic images), or Text (if you're printing text or spot colors) 5 Choose OK. 6 Choose any other options you want from the Finder’s Printing menu: 7 Start/Stop Print Queue Choose these options to start or stop the print queue.
QCOLOR Color Control Accessing QCOLOR for the Macintosh » Note: If your Macintosh has QuickDraw GX installed, see “Accessing QCOLOR for a Macintosh with QuickDraw GX Installed” on page 6. 1 If you haven’t already, install the Macintosh printer driver. See “Installing Macintosh Printer Drivers” in chapter 1, “Connecting the Printer” for information. 2 Open or create the file you want to print. 3 From the application’s File menu, choose Print. 4 In the Print dialog box, choose Options.
QCOLOR Color Control 6 Choose the Save button to save the QCOLOR settings between print jobs. Because QCOLOR automatically adjusts the Halftone, CRD, and (for the Overhead setting) Media Type, these individual settings in the Options dialog box do not have to be adjusted, so they are grayed out when a QCOLOR option is chosen. To be able to access individual settings such as Halftone and CRD, then QCOLOR must be turned off (choose Printer's Default from the QCOLOR list box to turn off QCOLOR.
Other Methods of Color Control Other Methods of Color Control Color Matching A major concern in the color publishing industry today is keeping color consistent across devices with different color models. For example, when you scan a color photograph, the scanner sends the image data to the computer in an RGB (Red-Blue-Green) format. The computer then converts the data into another RGB format to display it on the monitor.
Other Methods of Color Control The advantages of using a CMS are that you get consistent color across all devices, and an on-screen preview of output. However, CMS’s are not portable across platforms, they can be expensive, and they do consume processing time and power at the host. A few well-known color management systems include Kodak ColorSense, Agfa FotoFlow, Electronics for Imaging EFIColor, Pantone POCE, and Apple ColorSync.
Other Methods of Color Control Color Matching with PANTONE* Your printer has been approved by Pantone Inc. to simulate PANTONE Colors. Pantone specifies hundreds of spot colors, each identified by a unique number. Each of these spot colors can be simulated on the printer with the appropriate combination of process (CMYK) colors. Within a Pantone-licensed application (such as Aldus FreeHand or Adobe Illustrator), you can choose a PANTONE Color number and the corresponding CMYK simulation is printed.
Other Methods of Color Control identified solid color standards. Use current PANTONE* Color Reference Manuals (available from Pantone, Inc.) for accurate color. The advantages of using PANTONE Color matching are that it is easy to use, it is widely supported, and that it is good for spot color. However, it is not as accurate as other methods of color matching, it can't be used for photographs, and it is only supported by applications.
Other Methods of Color Control patterns, and banding typically found in traditional printing. In general, it should be used for these purposes: n n » If you’re printing photographic images, especially photographs of faces, to get photo-realistic color output For jobs containing a mixture of text and graphic images Note: Some application software may be set up to ignore the printer's color settings.
Other Methods of Color Control QMS developed the Photographic CRD to optimize the quality of photographic images and other images with many subtle color shifts. Like the Colorimetric CRD, the Photographic CRD substitutes out-ofgamut colors with in-gamut colors, but it also adjusts (compresses) all other colors (whether in-gamut or out-of-gamut) as necessary to maintain the proportional relationship between the colors.
Refilling the Media Cassette Refilling the Media Cassette Use the following procedure to refill the standard or optional media trays. 1 2-16 Pull the paper cassette out of the printer.
Refilling the Media Cassette 2 Make sure the size key slide on the back end of the cassette is set for letter- or A4-size media. EX » LT A4 LG Note: For the best quality printouts, before you load paper in the cassette, look at the paper packaging to determine which is the printing side of the paper (an arrow points in the direction of the printing side on most packaging). Also, if you're printing on paper, fan it to prevent the sheets from sticking together.
Refilling the Media Cassette 3 Load the paper (printing-side up) in the cassette. For letterhead or preprinted media load the top-end first. Make sure the paper lies flat and does not exceed the upper-limit mark on the cassette for paper or foils (transparencies). Paper Foil 4 2-18 Adjust the paper guides on each side and on the trailing edge of the media so that they rest lightly against the media without causing it to buckle.
Refilling the Media Cassette 5 » Slide the filled cassette into the printer until it snaps firmly into place and is flush with the front of the printer. Note: Make sure the printer is configured for the media type (paper or transparency) you have in the cassette or print quality could degrade. Media type can be selected through the printer's control panel.
Using the Manual Feed Tray Using the Manual Feed Tray You can feed a single sheet at a time to the printer using the manualfeed tray. This allows you to print on a different media type without changing the media in the cassette, or to print on media not supported by the standard cassette (envelopes or thick stock). 1 Use your application's print setup feature to select the manual-feed tray and the media type you plan to use (paper or transparency).
Using the Manual Feed Tray 3 Open the manual-feed tray by lightly pressing on the topright corner to release the spring latch. 4 Move the paper guides on the manual feed tray to fit the size of the chosen media.
Using the Manual Feed Tray 5 Insert a single sheet of media, printing side up, with the top edge leading into the printer, in the manual feed tray (fig. 5.3) until it reaches the rear of the tray inside the printer and lies flat. The media wrapping should indicate which is the printing side. If you're printing envelopes, load the envelope printing-side up, so that the flap side will be on the left when the envelope is pulled into the printer. 6 2-22 Through your application, print your document.
Printing on Different Types of Print Media Printing on Different Types of Print Media Printing Transparencies 1 See “Refilling the Media Cassette” on page 16 or “Using the Manual Feed Tray” on page 20 for information on loading media. 2 If you haven't previously, set up the tray you want to use for transparency printing: 3 a At the printer control panel, press the Online/Offline key. b Press the Tray Select key until the LED for tray you want to use for transparencies is lit on the control panel.
Printing on Different Types of Print Media Printing Labels For best results when printing labels, format labels through your application and then run a test print on plain paper to check formatting and avoid wasting label sheets. 1 See “Refilling the Media Cassette” on page 16 or “Using the Manual Feed Tray” on page 20 for information on loading media in the cassette. Make sure you place the labels printing-side up with the top edge feeding into the printer first.
Printing on Different Types of Print Media Printing on 3-Hole or Other Pre-punched Media Print 3-hole or other pre-punched media the same way labels are printed. Make sure you place the media printing-side up with the top edge feeding into the printer first. Printing Envelopes Envelopes can be printed from the manual-feed tray or from the optional envelope cassette.
Printing on Different Types of Print Media c Press the Select key to choose the Operator Control menu.

Clearing Media Jams 3 Open the paper exit unit.
Clearing Media Jams 4 Open the pressure-release lever on the fuser unit. Pressure-Release Lever ▲ Caution: If you can see the outer jam in the transfer unit, always remove it by pulling the media out through the transfer unit, not up and out the paper exit unit. This prevents the unfused toner from coming off on the exit rollers and getting down into the printer. Since toner images on the media aren't set, avoid getting loose toner on your hands and clothes while removing the jammed media.
Clearing Media Jams 5 Remove the jammed media by pulling it straight out from above the transfer unit. 6 Close the transfer unit, and then the back cover. 7 Close the pressure release lever on the fuser unit. 8 Close the paper exit unit. When the control panel message window displays IDLE, the printer is ready to print.
Clearing Media Jams If the Media Jam Message Stays On n If a jam message displays in the control panel message window, clear the jam using the appropriate procedure from “Clearing Media Jams” on page 27. If the message is still there, make sure cassettes have the correct size media, the size key slide on the back end of the cassette is set correctly, and all covers and doors are completely closed.
Clearing Media Jams 1 Open the back cover of the printer. 2 Open the transfer unit by grasping the green handle in the center and pulling it toward you and down.
Clearing Media Jams M WARNING! The fuser unit is hot!. ACHTUNG! Die Fixiereinheit wird sehr heiß!. 3 Place a finger on each side of the brown drum, and push down evenly on both sides to seat the drum firmly. Drum 4 Close the transfer unit and then the back cover. 5 Turn the printer off and then on again. Front If the ENGINE ERROR E9 message still displays in the control panel message window, you must call for service. See appendix A, “QMS Customer Support,” for information on how to contact QMS.
Testing Printerto-Host Communication Testing Printer-to-Host Communication Testing Printer-to-Macintosh Communication You can check communication between the printer selected in the Chooser and the Macintosh by sending a file to the printer from an application (see your application documentation for more information) or by printing a directory, as described here: 1 Display a disk or folder window. 2 Set up page information. Choose Page Setup from the File menu.
Testing Printerto-Host Communication symbol means to press the Enter key. To produce the ^D and ^Z, press and hold down the Ctrl key while you type the appropriate letters (d and z). These characters signify the end of the file and must always be included. Sending the Test File Parallel Test 1 To send the PRINTEST.PS file you just created to the printer, type print printest.
Testing Printerto-Host Communication c Reboot the PC and try the communication test again. If the printer repeatedly fails to complete this test, refer to your DOS documentation for more information. Serial Test 1 Go to the DOS C:\ prompt. 2 At the DOS C:\ prompt, send PRINTEST.PS to the printer by typing the following command: print printest.
Testing Printerto-Host Communication To find out what the printer's serial settings are, check the printer's start-up page, which printed out when you first turned it on. It lists the printer's current serial port settings. To change them to match the PC serial settings, use the printer control panel as described below: 1 Press the printer control panel Online/Offline key to make the Online LED go out.
Testing Printerto-Host Communication 8 Press the Select key. The message window momentarily displays RATE IS SELECTED (where RATE is the baud rate you selected) and then SERIAL BAUD RATE If you want to change other settings, use the Next key to scroll to the setting you want to change, then repeat the procedure described in steps 6 through 8 for finding and selecting new settings. 9 When you have finished making changes, press the Online/ Offline key.

Diagnostic and Special Pages Language Reference Manual (Adobe Systems Incorporated, Reading, PA: Addison-Wesley, 1990, ISBN 0-201-18127-4) for information on interpreting PostScript errors. Diagnostic and Special Pages There may be times when you want to check the current status of your printer, adjust the quality of your printed copy, or monitor print jobs. To help you do this, the printer has several types of diagnostic and special pages.
Diagnostic and Special Pages n The highest possible resolution (for monochrome and four-color jobs) that can be printed on the currently selected page size with the amount of printer RAM currently installed Disabling the Start-up Page After you install the printer and establish communication between the printer and the host, you may want to disable the start-up page to conserve toner, developer, and print media.
Diagnostic and Special Pages » Note: The sizes listed on the status pages are in bytes, so you must divide the numbers on the status pages by 1024 to get the equivalent number of kilobytes entered through the control panel. The Registration Page You can print a registration page through the control panel Administration/Special Pages menu. This page allows you to check color registration (placement of each of the process colors on the page).
Diagnostic and Special Pages The Color Balance Adjustment Page This page shows you how to adjust the print density for your printer. Areas of the page are used to indicate adjustment procedures to follow to correct print density problems. The explanations below give you information about the different areas of the page. Refer to “Print Density Problems” on page 14 to show you how to use this special page. Color Balance Adjustment Page 1 2 90° 45° Target – + 6 C – + Instructions 1.
Diagnostic and Special Pages 4-54 1 Squares—shows the quality of squares. The black and color squares show smearing or scattering when there is a toner density problem. 2 Bars—shows the quality of bars. The black and color bars shows smearing or scattering when there is a toner density problem. 3 90° Swatch Column—shows the color matching swatches that will indicate a 90° change in the print density adjustment dial.
