Section 5
Using QLconfig
5.1
Introduction
This section provides step-by-step instructions on using QLconfig to configure and
manage Fibre Channel Storage Area Networks (SANs). See section 4 for
descriptions of the QLconfig windows and dialogs.
QLconfig enables you to perform four types of operations to configure a device in
the system:
❑ Disable (unconfigure) a device on a QLA2xxx adapter: When you
unconfigure a device, it is no longer recognized by the QLA2xxx adapter
and is inaccessible to that QLA2xxx adapter on that system.
❑ Enable a device: You can add a device and make it accessible to the
QLA2xxx adapter on the system.
❑ Designate a device as a secondary path for failover: When a device is
accessible from more than one QLA2xxx adapter in the same system, and
you are using the QLconfig High Availability version, you can assign one
path as the primary path and the other one as the failover path. In this
configuration, if the primary path fails, the system switches to the failover
path to assure that the transfer of data is not interrupted.
NOTE: For Windows NT and Windows 2000 systems, this feature
requires the installation of QLdirect (see section 2.3).
❑ Remove a device and replace it with one that has been inserted: In a hot-plug
environment, the QLA2xxx adapter does not automatically purge a device
that has been physically removed. Likewise, it does not delete a device that
is no longer accessible because of errors or failure. Internally, the QLA2xxx
adapter keeps the device in its database and marks it as unconfigured. When
you insert a new device, the QLA2xxx adapter simply adds it to the
database. Thus, with QLconfig, you can delete the removed device’s data
from the QLA2xxx’s database and assign the inserted device the same slot
as the one that it replaces.
