Chapter 7. Attaching to an IBM S/390 or IBM eServer zSeries
host
This chapter describes the host system requirements to attach the IBM S/390 or
zSeries host system to the ESS ESCON adapter or FICON adapter.
For information about how to use parallel access volumes (PAVs) for S/390 and
zSeries hosts, see the IBM Enterprise Storage Server User’s Guide. The guide
includes an overview of PAV and PAV requirements, and an example of the
input/output configuration program (IOCP).
Figure 38 shows how an ESS that is attached through ESCON links to different
computer-electronic complexes and logical partitions (LPARs). It also shows a
configuration that has been designed for optimum availability. For optimum
availability, make the ESCON host adapters available through all bays. For optimum
performance, have at least eight host adapter ports installed on four ESCON host
adapter cards in the ESS. This setup ensures the best performance from the
attached systems.
