Attaching to multiple RS/6000 or pSeries hosts without the
HACMP/6000
™
host system
This section describes the requirements and provides the instructions to attach one
or two ESSs to multiple host systems without the High Availability Cluster
Multi-Processing/6000 (HACMP/6000) host system.
Install HACMP/6000 to define and access a unique journaled file system (JFS) file
stored on a single ESS from any attached host system.
When attaching multiple host systems to an ESS, consider the following:
v Multiple host systems cannot access the same volume group or the same
journaled file system simultaneously.
v Without HACMP/6000, some system failure management features such as
failover are not available. Therefore, a failure on the ESS or any one of the
connected host systems will most likely affect the availability of the other
connected devices.
v You must vary and mount the volume groups and journaled file systems every
time you start the system.
v The ESS does not allow ownership of volume groups to move from one system
to another.
v When you use this procedure, you can define between2-4multiple host
systems.
Software requirements
This section lists the software requirements for attaching multiple RS/6000 or
pSeries host systems to the ESS.
v For details about the RS/6000 or pSeries operating system requirements, see the
following Web site:
www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ess/supserver.htm
v All host systems must have the devices.SCSI.TM (target mode) package
installed.
v All host systems connected to the same ESS must have either the same or
compatible SCSI interface cards installed.
v You must set unique IDs for the SCSI interface cards on the ESS.
The IBM SSR uses the ESS Specialist to assign the SCSI addresses.
Note: Use the information on the logical configuration work sheets in the IBM
Enterprise Storage Server Configuration Planner that you should have
previously filled out.
v All host systems must have the external SCSI ID of each adapter (interface card
that is set to a unique ID). Follow the instructions in your RS/6000 or pSeries
documents for setting the IDs.
v Restart the systems to make the changes effective.
Hardware requirements
You need the following hardware to connect an ESS to multiple host systems:
v A cable to connect the ESS to each host system SCSI adapter card.
v This configuration allows up to 32 host SCSI attachments. Refer to your host
system documents for instructions about connecting additional SCSI interface
cards with a Y-cable.
