Specifications
Note: From an ESS logical configuration view point, all AS/400 disks are RAID-5
and are protected within the ESS. When you create the AS/400 disk using
ESS Specialist, you can create it as a protected or unprotected volume. See
Table 11.
Table 11. Size and type of the protected and unprotected AS/400 models
Size Type Protected Unprotected
4.190 GB 9337 48C 48A

Note: IBM does not support versions of the OS/400 operating system prior to Version 4
Release 4.0. If your operating system is down level, IBM recommends that you upgrade the
software to a more current version of the OS/400 operating system. For information about
the latest required program temporary fixes, go to the following Web sites:

Attaching with fibre-channel adapters to the iSeries host system
This section describes the host system requirements and provides the procedure to
attach your iSeries host system to the ESS with fibre-channel adapters. For host
system requirements and procedures to attach your AS/400 host system to an ESS
with SCSI adapters, see “Attaching with SCSI adapters to an AS/400 host system”
on page 45.
Notes:
1. You cannot serially connect more than one AS/400 host system to the ESS.
2. You cannot interconnect more than one ESS attachment to a single port on the
host adapter.
3. Your iSeries host system supports the ESS as a peripheral device.
The fibre-channel attached ESS presents individual ESS LUNs to the iSeries host
system. You do not need to perform manual tasks to assign LUN addresses
because the ESS does it automatically during configuration.
Note: You cannot use the IBM Subsystem Device Driver on the iSeries host
system.
Attachment requirements
This section lists the requirements for attaching the ESS to your host system:
1. Obtain the documents for the iSeries host system from the following Web site:
publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/as400/infocenter.htm
2. See the following Web site for details about program temporary fixes (PTFs)
that you might need to install on your iSeries host system:
www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ess/supserver.htm
3. Check the LUN limitations for your host system.
