Default operation on the MVS operating system uses a 30-second missing-interrupt

handler (MIH) timeout for the ESS.

See the preventive service planning (PSP) bucket for operating system support and

for planning information. The PSP includes authorized program analysis reports

(APARs) and programming temporary fixes (PTFs).

FICON-attached S/390 and zSeries hosts

ESS Models F10 and F20 attach to S/390 and zSeries host systems with FICON

channels. Each ESS fibre-channel adapter has one port. You can configure the port

to operate with the FICON upper layer protocol. When configured for FICON, the

fibre-channel port supports connections to a maximum of 128 FICON hosts with up

to 512 logical paths. On FICON, the fibre-channel adapter can operate with fabric or

point-to-point topologies. With fibre-channel adapters that are configured for FICON,

the ESS supports:

v Either fabric or point-to-point topologies

v A maximum of 128 channel logins per fibre-channel port

v A maximum of 256 logical paths control-unit image (requires LIC level of 1.6.0 or

greater)

v A maximum of 256 logical paths on each fibre-channel port

v A maximum of 4096 logical paths across all fibre-channel ports

v Access to all 16 control-unit images (4096 CKD devices) over each FICON port

Note: Certain FICON host channels may support more devices than the 4096

possible devices on an ESS. This allows you to attach other control units or

other ESS to the same host channel up to the limit that the host supports.

FICON is not supported on the ESS Models E10 and E20. ESS Models F10 and

F20 support both longwave and shortwave adapters.
