Specifications

Fibre-channel adapters that are configured for SCSI-FCP (fibre-channel protocol)
support:
v A maximum of 128 host logins per fibre-channel port
v A maximum of 512 SCSI-FCP host logins or SCSI-3 initiators per ESS
v A maximum of 4096 LUNs per target (one target per host adapter), depending on
host type
v Port masking and LUN by target
v Either fibre-channel arbitrated lop (FC-AL), fabric, or point-to-point topologies
The ESS supports the following host systems for shortwave fibre-channel
attachment and longwave fibre-channel attachment.
v IBM AS/400 and iSeries with the IBM OS/400 operating system
v IBM NUMA-Q and xSeries with the ptx operating system
v IBM RS/6000, pSeries, RS/6000 SP, and pSeries SP with the IBM AIX operating
system
v Hewlett-Packard with the HP/UX operating system
v Intel-based servers with Microsoft Windows NT operating system
v Intel-based servers with Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system
v Intel-based servers with Novell NetWare operating system
v Linux with the Red Hat Linux 7.1 and SuSE Linux 7.1
v Sun with the Solaris operating system
See “Fibre-channel architecture” on page 13 for information about the fibre-channel
protocols that the ESS supports. See the following ESS Web site for details about
types, models, adapters, and the operating systems that the ESS supports:

ESCON-attached S/390 and zSeries hosts
An ESS attaches to S/390 and zSeries host systems with ESCON channels. With
ESCON adapters, the ESS supports:
v A maximum of logical paths per port
v A maximum of 2048 logical paths across all ESCON ports
v A maximum of 256 logical paths per control-unit image (requires ESS LIC level of
1.6.0 or greater)
v Access to all 16 control-unit images (4096 CKD devices) over a single ESCON
port on the ESS
.
Note: Certain host channels might limit the number of devices per ESCON channel
to 1024. To fully access all 4096 devices on an ESS, it might be necessary
to multiplex the signals from the four ESCON host channels. You can access
the devices through a switch to a single ESS ESCON port. This method
exposesfour control-unit images (1024 devices) to each host channel.
The FICON bridge card in ESCON director 9032 Model 5 enables a FICON bridge
channel to connect to ESCON host adapters in the ESS. The FICON bridge
architecture supports up to 16384 devices per channel.
The ESS supports the following operating systems for S/390 and zSeries hosts:
