Appendix B. Migrating from SCSI to fibre-channel
This chapter describes how to migrate disks or logical volumes within the ESS from
SCSI to fibre-channel for the following host systems:
v Hewlett-Packard
v RS/6000 (AIX
v Windows NT
v Windows 2000
An experienced system administrator should perform the migration.
There are two methods for migrating:
v Nonconcurrent
v Concurrent
See the ESS Fibre-Channel Migration Scenarios white paper for information about
changing your host system attachment to the ESS from SCSI and SAN Data
Gateway to native fibre-channel attachment. The white paper is available at the
following ESS Web site:
www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ess/refinfo.htm
See the Implementing Fibre-Channel Attachment on the ESS Redbook. This book
helps you to install, tailor, and configure fibre-channel attachment of open-systems
hosts to the ESS. It gives you a broad understanding of the procedures involved
and describes the prerequisites and requirements. It also shows you how to
implement fibre-channel attachment. This book also describes the steps you must
perform to migrate to direct fibre-channel attachment from native SCSI adapters. It
describes the steps you must perform to migrate from fibre-channel attachment
through the SAN Data Gateway (SDG).

Software requirements
You must have the following software before you migrate from SCSI adapters to
fibre-channel adapters:
v Internet browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer)
v SAN Data Gateway Explorer
v Disk Administrator
Preparing a host system to change from SCSI to fibre-channel
attachment
Before you migrate, you must have at least one ESS with SCSI adapters already
installed.
Before you can use ESS Specialist to change a host system attached to the ESS
from SCSI to fibre-channel, perform the following steps:
1. Upgrade the microcode and install the IBM Subsystem Device Driver (optional).
For more information about the IBM Subsystem Device Driver, see the Web
site:
