QLogic 8300 Series Converged Network Adapters Ooad the VM Kernel from
Switching Virtual NICs
Single Root I/O Virtualizaon is a standard that allows one PCI Express (PCIe) adapter to be presented as
mulple separate logical devices to VMs for paroning adapter bandwidth. The hypervisor manages the
Physical Funcon (PF) while the Virtual Funcons (VFs) are exposed to the VMs. In the hypervisor, SR-IOV-
capable network devices oer the benets of direct I/O, which includes reduced latency and reduced host
CPU ulizaon. With SR-IOV, pass-through funconality can be provided from a single adapter to mulple
VMs through VFs. To deploy SR-IOV today, an organizaon needs to ensure a minimum level of infrastructure
(server hardware and OS) support for SR-IOV. In contrast, QLogic NPAR technology can similarly be used
today without the minimum levels of dependencies of SR-IOV.
Low-Latency Connecvity
Latency is the me between the start and compleon of one acon
measured in microseconds (µs).
Latency
With SR-IOV enabled on a 10GbE NIC, pass-through funconality can be provided from a single adapter to
mulple VMs through VFs.
