OnlydesktopsintheReady,Error,or
Customizingstatewithnoschedulesorpending
cancellationscanberebalanced.Inaddition,youcannotrebalancetheloadbetweenthe
localstoragesystemsonmultiplestandaloneESXservers.
Itisrecommendedtokeeplinkedclonedesktopvirtualmachinesonadatastorewith
noothertypeofvirtualmachinesothatthe
rebalanceactionisappliedtoallthevirtual
machines.
Persistent and Non-Persistent Desktops
Bothpersistentandnon‐persistentdesktopconfigurationsaresupportedbyView
Composer.Inpersistentconfigurations,dedicateddisks—asystemdiskforoperating
systemdataandauserdiskforuserdata—canbeusedtokeeptheoperatingsystem
anduserdataseparate.Thisensuresthateveniftheoperatingsystemisrecomposed
or
refreshedtheuserdataremainsunaffected.
Innon‐persistentconfigurationstheuserdataistransientsotheoperatingsystemdata
anduserdataarestoredonthesystemdisk.Inthisconfigurationuserdataisnot
protectedifthesystemisrecomposedorrefreshed.

OTEInordertorebalancethedesktopsitisnecessaryforViewManagerto
automaticallyrefreshtheiroperatingsystemsagainsttheircurrentbaseimageand
returnthesystemdatatoitsbaselinestate—userdataisunaffectedifitresidesona
separateuserdatadisk.
NOTEPersistentdesktopscanbesettorefreshautomaticallywhentheuserlogsoff.
Thiscanhelpminimizethespacerequirementsofthepool.Similarly,non‐persistent
poolscanbesettodeleteafterfirstuse,whichreducesthenumberofinactivedesktops
inthepooloverall.
