WithVMwareInfrastructure3.5,recompositionisexpeditedbyanadditionalprotected
linkedclonedesktopinVirtualCenterServer,calledasourcevirtualmachine.This
sourcevirtualmachineiscreatedalongsidethereplicawhenalinkedclonedesktop
poolisfirstdeployed.WithVMwareInfrastructure3.5,thesourcevirtualmachineis
locatedwith
thereplicainsideafoldercalledVMwareViewComposerReplicaFolderin
VirtualCenterServer.
Whenarecompositioneventtakesplace,thesourcevirtualmachineisthefirstdesktop
toberecomposedagainstanewsnapshot.ViewComposerremovestheexistinglinked
clonedesktoppoolfromtheVirtualCenterServerandthencopiesthesourcevirtual
machine
asmanytimesasnecessaryinordertoreplaceit.
Thismethodofpoolgenerationoptimizestherecompositionprocessandistypically
muchfasterthanindividuallyrecomposingeachlinkedclonedesktopinthepool.
Desktop Refresh
Adesktoprefreshissimilartoadesktoprecompositionbutwithoutanychangetothe
baseimage.Thisactioniscarriedoutinordertorestorethesystemdataforadesktop
pooltoabaselinestateandtherebyreducethesizeoftheoperatingsystemdataofeach
attachedclone.
Adesktoprefreshcanbecarriedouteitherondemand,asatimedevent,orwhenthe
operatingsystemdatareachesaspecifiedsize.Figure 6‐3illustratestheeffectofthis
action—notethattheuserdatadiskremainsunaffectedbythisevent.
