Becausethedeltadisksforeachdesktopwillinevitablygrowovertime,duringlinked
clonedeploymentyoucandefinethemaximumallowablesizeofeachvirtualmachine,
uptotheoriginalsizeoftheParentVM.Theamountofdiskspacerequiredtostorethe
differencebetweenthelinkedcloneoperating
systemdataandParentVMoperating
systemdatawilltypicallyremainfarsmallerthanthatrequiredbyastandardclone.If
thesizeofthedeltadiskgetstoolargeitcanbereturnedtoitsbaselinestatebycarrying
outadesktoprefresh.
Thin Provisioning
Operatingsystemdatadisksanduserdatadisksuseaprocesscalledthinprovisioning
inordertominimizestoragecosts.Disksthatemploythisprocessoccupynomore
spacethanthatrequiredbythedataitcontains,andthisreducestheamountofphysical
diskcapacityinitiallyrequiredwhenadesktop
iscreated.
Storage Overcommit
Whenthedatastoreforanewlinkedclonedesktoppoolisassigned,administratorscan
controlhowaggressivelythesystemassignsnewvirtualmachinestothefreespace
availableonthedatastorebymodifyingthestorageovercommitproperty.
Whenthestorageovercommitlevelislow,themajorityoffreespaceisused
asbuffer
inwhichthedeltadisksforeachclonecanexpand.Astheovercommitlevelincreases,
lessspaceisreservedforindividualdeltadiskgrowthbutmorevirtualmachinesfiton
thedatastore.
Thestorageovercommitlevelcalculatestheamountofstoragethatisgreaterthanthe
physicalsizeof
thedatastorethatthecloneswoulduseifeachclonewereafulldesktop.
