APPENDIX-2
Decoder - A microprocessor based device that accepts a
digital input signal from a scanner, decodes that signal, and
transmits the barcoded data to another device.
Depth of Field - The distance between the maximum and
minimum plane from which a bar code symbol can be read.
EAN - European Article Numbering System, the international
standard bar code for retail food packages.
EIA - Electronic Industries Association.
Laser Diode - A semiconductor device that emits a highly
concentrated beam of light.
Misalignment - Misorientation of the code from its normal
position.
Non-Volatile Memory - Memory that will not lose its
contents with an interruption of power.
No Read - Inability to read a barcode because of a defective
code symbol, missing code symbol, or decoder failure.
Omni-Directional - A bar code reading system that can
read a code regardless of orientation. Usually this type of
scanner emits multiple scanning beams.
Pitch - Misalignment of the bar code symbol around the x-
axis.
