5. INSTALLATION
Preparation (Cont.)
Fresh installations of stone veneer units should be firmly set
and allowed to cure a minimum of 12 hours before grouting.
If a sealer is going to be used on the stone veneer units, it
can be applied as a grout release with a brush or roller to the
clean, dry unit surface before grouting. Care must be taken to
keep the sealer on the face of the units only. This step can
help to keep any spilled or unwanted joint grout from sticking
to the surface of the units, yet allow the grout to stick to the
sides of the units. Always check with the stone veneer
supplier for the type of sealer to be used and test in a small
area prior to application.
Joints should generally be - in. (9.5-16 mm) wide and
should not exceed 3 in. (7.5 cm) width. Grout depth should
be a minimum of ¼ in. (6 mm) and a maximum of 2 in. (5
cm) and should be as consistent as possible to maintain even
color, especially for colored or white joint grout.
Note: It is the responsibility of the installer/applicator to ensure the
suitability of the product for its intended use.
Mixing
1. Use cool, clean, potable water in the range of 50º-80ºF (10º-
27ºC) for mixing. Always use clean tools and mixing
containers. Mix with water only, no bonding additives.
2. Add just enough dry mix to the liquid, begin with 2.5 qt. (2.4
L) water per 50 lb. (22.7 kg) bag. Add additional water
sparingly up to 4 qt. (3.8 L) total, while mixing 3-5 minutes
by mechanical mixer or by hand. Too much water will cause
reduced strength. Mortar should be a uniform, lump-free
consistency. Grout should be firm, but workable to be
trowelable, and stiff enough to retain ridges and peaks when
troweled on a horizontal or vertical surface.
3. Let mortar slake/rest for 5 minutes, Remix and use. Do not
add additional powder or liquid after slaking, as this may
cause shrinkage. Stir occasionally to keep fluffy. Maintain
water and mixing time consistency among batches.
4. Bucket life is approximately 2 hours, at normal temperatures
of 70°F (21°C). Warmer temperatures will reduce the bucket
life. Do not mix more product than can be placed in 2 hours.
Application
Apply only to surfaces that are frost free and between 40°-90°F
(4.4°C-32°C) within 24 hours of application and 72 hours
thereafter. Do not apply in direct sunlight on hot, windy days, or
when rain is expected within 24 hours.
For best results, place Stone Veneer Joint Grout into a
mortar/grout bag, then squeeze the grout bag to fill joints
around each unit. Grout can also be installed using a trowel
and tuck-pointing tool, or tuck-pointing gun.
Cut approximately ½ in. (13 mm) hole in tip of grout bag. Fill
bag about ½ -¾ full of the Joint Grout. Twist the top end of
the bag and squeeze to remove any air pockets, then fill all
joints between veneer units to desired depth.
Trowel, rake and/or brush to consolidated and smooth the
joints.
Once the grout surface dries to become firm and thumbprint
hard, but not fully set-up, use a jointing tool or S-tool to strike
joints to the desired finish. Be consistent with tooling
techniques.
Remove all dry, loose grout, or excess residue with a circular
motion using a masonry brush or small soft bristle brush.
Avoid rapid hardening or excessive water loss by evaporation
by working in sections less than 5-10 sq. ft. (0.4-0.9 m
2
).
Keep Stone Veneer Joint Grout from the surface of the stone
veneer units, colored grouts in particular can stain the
surface. Do not allow grout spots on the face of the stone to
set-up overnight. In most cases, allow the grout to dry slightly
to become “crumbly”, then remove with a brush, whisk
broom, steel wool, or trowel with a light circular motion. If
grout is removed while very wet, it is likely to smear.
Do not apply grout into control or movement joints, or where
veneer stone meets dissimilar materials such as glass, wood,
or vinyl. Use an elastomeric, flexible sealant or caulking such
as ProSpec
®
Stone Veneer Sealant in those spaces.
Clean up
Clean all tools with soapy water before mortar dries.
Limitations
Any variations in mix water amount, mixing time, curing
conditions, and finishing can cause color variations.
Do not retemper, adding additional water after initial mixing.
Do not overwater.
Do not rake and tool finish joints too early or too late to
maintain color consistency throughout the project.
Install in accordance with local building codes and applicable
ASTM standards.
Follow precast masonry/stone manufacturers instructions and
requirements for grouting instructions and techniques.
Curing
If conditions are very hot, dry, or windy, curing with a gentle
mist of water will help prevent premature drying and improve
mortar strength.
Coverage
50 lb. (22.7 kg) bag: Yields approximately .44 ft
3
(12.5 L),
coverage in joints will vary with depth and width.
