6.5.9 Antenna location, spacing, and mounting
Considerthefollowingpointsregardingantennalocation,spacing,andmounting:
Whenplacingantennas,ensureaclearlineofsightbetweenthemasterradio'santennaand
alloftheotherradioantennas.
Ifthesitebasecontainsobstructingterrainorstructures,mounttheantennaonatoweror
rooftopto
providealine‐of‐sightpath.Theline‐of‐sightconsiderationbecomesmore
importantasthetransmissionpathbecomeslonger.
Mounttheantennasashighoffthegroundasispractical.Thehigheranantennaisabove
theground,thegreateritsrange.
Mounttheantennasawayfrom
massivestructures.Radiosignalsbounceoffmetalwalls,for
example,whichcancompromiseaclearsignal.
Mountantennastominimizetheamountofnearbymetalstructuresintheantennapattern.
MounttheantennasandinstallradiosawayfromsourcesofRFinterference.
Usetheshortestpossibleantennacable
length.Signalslosepoweroverthecable'sdistance.
Chooseantennasthatareappropriateforthenetwork'sintendedfunction.
Ifantennasareonradiosonthesamenetwork,mountthemsotheyhavethesamepolarity.
Iftheantennasareonseparatenetworks,mountthemsotheyhavea
differentantenna
polarity—forexample,mountoneantennaverticallyandtheotherhorizontally.
Spaceradiosatleastthreefeet(onemeter)apartsotheydonotoverloadeachother.If
antennasmustbeneareachother:
o Mountomnidirectionalantennasdirectlyaboveeachother.
o Positiondirectionalantennassotheydonotpointatnearbyantennas.Placeantennas
sidebysideiftheypointinthesamedirection.Placeantennasbacktobackiftheypoint
inoppositedirections.
