6.2.1 About the Adapter
Important: You must use series C POINT I/O modules with the ILX34-AENWG adapter. Series A
or B POINT I/O modules will not work with this adapter.
TheILX34‐AENWGadapterperformsthefollowingprimarytasks:
Controlofreal‐timeI/Odata(alsoknownasimplicitmessaging)‐theILX34‐AENWGadapter
servesasabridgebetweenPOINTI/Omodulesandthenetwork
Supportofmessagingdataforconfigurationandprogramminginformation(alsoknownas
explicitmessaging)
6.2.2 Understand the Producer/Consumer Model
TheCIPproducer/consumernetworkingmodelreplacestheoldsource/destination
(master/slave)model.Theproducer/consumermodelreducesnetworktrafficandincreases
speedoftransmission.IntraditionalI/Osystems,controllerspollinputmodulestoobtaintheir
inputstatus.IntheCIPsystem,inputmodulesarenotpolledbyacontroller.Instead,they
produce(multicast)
theirdataeitheruponachangeofstate(COS)orperiodically.
Thefrequencyofupdatedependsupontheoptionschosenduringconfigurationandwhereon
thenetworktheinputmoduleresides.Theinputmodule,therefore,isaproducerofinputdata,
andthecontrollerisaconsumerofthedata.
Thecontrollercanalsoproducedataforothercontrollerstoconsume.Theproducedand
consumeddataisaccessiblebymultiplecontrollersandotherdevicesovertheEtherNet/IP
network.Thisdataexchangeconformstotheproducer/consumermodel.
