1.5 Planning the Network
Beforeyouconfigureandinstallthenetwork,youshouldcreateaplanforit.Thefollowingpoints
assumethatyouarecreatingabridgenetworkofmastersandrepeaters,butyoucanalsosetup
clientstoworkwithdevicesonexistingwirelessLANs.Forinformation,seeSetupaClient.

Thesimplestwaytodesignthephysicalnetworkofradios,antennas,connectors,cables,
amplifiersandotheraccessories,istouseProSoftWirelessDesigner(page18).Thisapplication
determinesyourhardwareneedsbasedonyouranswerstoafewquestions,andthengenerates
aBillofMaterialsspecifyingallthecomponen ts
youwillneedforyourinstallation.
Tobegin,determinewhereyouneedradiosandthenchooselocationsforthemaccordingly.
Forexample,youmightdecidetoinstallyourmasterradionearaPCinacentralplant
location(YoucanusethePCtoconfiguretheradiosthroughtheRadio
Configuration/
DiagnosticUtility).Iftheplantisanoilrefinery,forexample,youmightdecidetoinstall
radiosneartheoiltanks.
Thenextimportantissueishowtolinktheradios.Unlesstheradiosareveryclosetogether,
youmustmakesurethateachpairofradio
antennasinthenetworkhasalineofsight
betweenthem.Inotherwords,youmustbeabletoseefromoneantennatoanother,either
withthenakedeye,orwithbinoculars.
Ifalineofsightdoesnotexistbetweenantennas,youmustchooseasiteforinstalling
a
repeaterradio,whichwillcreateabridgebetweentheradioantennas.
Choosetheappropriateantennasforthenetwork.Ifanantennawillbeconnectedtothe
radiobyalongcable,youmightneedtopurchaseapoweramplifier,whichisavailablefrom
ProSoftTechnology.Themoredistance
betweenanantennaanditsradio,themoresignal
losstheradiowillhave.
Considerdrawingupyournetworkplansonpaper.Aspartofthedrawing,youshouldassign
alogicalnametoeachradio.Youcanusethesenameslaterwhenconfiguringtheradiosin
theRadioConfiguration
/DiagnosticUtility.
Aspartofyourplanning,youmightwanttoconductasitesurvey.ProSoftTechnologycan
performthissurvey,youcandoityourself,oryoucanhireasurveyor.
Protectradiosfromdirectexposuretoweather,andprovideanadequate,stablepower
source.Make
surethatyourplancomplieswiththeradio’spowerrequirementsandcable
specifications.
Important: Radios and antennas must be located at least 8 inches (20 cm) away from personnel.
