After this initial production run, the rest of the week
went just as well. “The peak 30 seconds never went
more than 22% utilization,” Armour asserts. “All the
indicators were extremely low. Now we know we
have the horsepower to support peak loads.”
Armour notes that user response has been enthusiastic.
“We are getting comments about the system being
‘a lot faster,’” he says. ”Some large database
downloads from starting new clients that used to take
10 minutes now take half that time. Overall, I think that
downloads are actually more than 50% faster.”
Paycor also anticipates using DL980 servers at their
disaster recovery site and in the virtual environment,
where most applications run. “It is phenomenal how
many virtual machines we could put on the DL980
servers. The green payoff is substantial: fewer servers,
reduced power consumption, less required cooling
capacity, and a smaller floor space.”
Performance translates into better
service
“When a client has a question, the service associate
must be able to get to the data quickly,” Armour says.
“Previously, we were pushing the envelope, especially
during peak volume times when everybody wants
the resources at once. Now we have the headroom
we need.”

The new servers help give Paycor a competitive
advantage. “One-to-one client service is the
foundation we build our business on,” says Armour.
“With the DL980 servers, our associates now are
supported by the level of performance they need to
provide clients with quick, accurate information. This
is in contrast to the situation in which it could be 5:00
p.m. and the associates still had hundreds of payrolls
to get out.” By helping Paycor associates be more
efficient, the performance of the DL980 servers results
in higher client satisfaction.
Armour is definitely impressed with the performance of
the new servers. “Even with transaction volume high,”
he says, “it looks like the DL980 is saying to us, ‘You
got anything more for me to do?’”
