and Acronyms
ARP Address Resolution Protocol. A TCP/IP protocol used to convert an IP address
into a physical address, such as an Ethernet address. Defined in RFC826.
AT Attention, modem command prefix.
BpP Bytes per Packet.
bps Bits per second. The standard measure of data transmission speeds.
CGI Common Gateway Interface. A standard for running external programs from a
World Wide Web HTTP server.
CPU Central Processing Unit.
CRC Cyclic Redundancy Checking. An error checking method that uses a 16 or 32-bit
polynomial that is derived from, stored and transmitted, with a block of data, in
order to detect corruption.
CSU Channel Service Unit. A device that performs protective and diagnostic functions
for a telecommunications line.
CTS Clear To Send. A modem signal line (pin 8 of DB-9 connectors), used for hard-
ware flow control. It is the counterpart to Request To Send (RTS). When the
remote end is ready to receive data, it sends a CTS signal to the local computer to
start transferring data.
DB-9 DB-xx is the designation for a series of port connectors for attaching devices to
computers. DB-9 specifically is a standard 9-pin, D-shell connector, used for RS-
232 serial communications.
DCD Data Carrier Detect. A modem signal line (pin 1 of DB-9 connectors).
DCE Data Communications Equipment. It is the interface that a modem or other serial
devices use to exchange data with a computer.
