UNDER VEHICLE INSTALLATION
PTRV-3 and PTRV-3 RR Model Generators which are designed to be installed
under a vehicles floorboard require specific mounting considerations. These units are
specifically engineered to be suspended from the underside of a vehicle. The anti-
vibration mounting hardware supplied is capable of supporting the units’ suspended
weight. An additional safety bolt is incorporated into each mounting bracket as a back-up
safety measure. The unit must be carefully positioned so not to interfere with any of the
vehicles components or systems. The vehicles frame and/or floor structure must be
capable of supporting the suspended weight. Additional support material must be added if
necessary. Use ½” Grade 8 mounting Bolts and Lock Nuts to secure the unit through the
frame or floorboards.
IMPORTANT: When mounting a unit through the floorboards it is Highly
Recommended
to add a backing plate of sufficient size and material to the inside of the
floorboards to distribute the weight and strengthen the area against flexing. Small
diameter flat washers are not adequate for this application and must not be used.
SPLASH GUARD
PTRV-3 and PTRV-3 RR Model Generators which are mounted in an under
vehicle installation maybe subjected to adverse road conditions such as water, mud,
debris, etc. To protect the unit against damage from these elements it is advisable to
install Splash Guards to prevent these elements from entering or clogging the air intake or
outlets of the enclosure. When a Remote Radiator is used in the installation, protecting
the fan and radiator core is essential. (See the following section on Remote Radiator
Installation for more Information).
REMOTE RADIATOR
PTRV-3 RR Model Generators are designed and manufactured to be installed
using a remotely mounted radiator unit to maintain normal engine operating temperature.
The remote radiator is housed inside a shroud which protects the radiator core and
facilitates mounting to the vehicle. A 12V DC electric fan mounted to the shroud insures
a positive air flow through the radiator.
The remote radiator unit must be mounted to a section of the vehicles undercarriage
that is free of obstructions. Cool ambient air must flow freely to the fan. Avoid heat generating
components such as engine, transmission, exhaust muffler, etc. Heat shields should be installed if
necessary. If heat shields and or splash guards are installed be sure the air flow into and out of
the unit is unobstructed. It is also important to prevent the recirculation of the heated discharged
air. Hoses and electrical wiring must be safely and securely routed to avoid any vehicle moving
components such as drive shaft, axle housing and springs. Only use automotive clamps and
locking fasteners for installation.
A remote mounted reservoir tank is provided to fill and maintain the cooling system at
the proper coolant level. The reservoir tank must be located above the height of the generator and
remote radiator unit.
IMPORTANT: To prevent overheating be sure all air bubbles are removed from the cooling
system prior to extended service. Check and maintain the coolant level at recommended
intervals.
