Operation and Use Questions
Call Powermate Customer Service at 1-800-463-4958
with questions or concerns about unit operation and
maintenance.
Before Starting Engine
IMPORTANT NOTE: Unit is shipped without oil. Add
engine oil before starting. See Adding Engine Oil for
instructions.
• Check engine oil and fuel levels.
• Inspect unit for damage.
• Check tire pressure.
• Inspect chipper knife for damage.
• Clean any debris from discharge area.
• Set wheel locks on both wheels to prevent move-
ment.
Break-in Period
For optimal performance, break-in the engine for approx-
imately 3 hours. During this period, do not apply heavy
load to the unit, or operate the engine at maximum
speed. Change the engine oil at 20 hours of use. Under
normal operating conditions, subsequent maintenance
follows the scheduled maintenance table.
Starting the Unit
Proceed as follows to start unit:
1. See Before Starting Engine.
2. See Figure 3-1. Set choke (A) to CHOKE. If
engine is warm, leave choke in RUN.
Figure 3-1. Engine Controls
3. Open fuel valve (B).
4. Set throttle lever (C) to one-third away from SLOW
(turtle).
5. See Figure 2-1. Set engine switch (P) to ON.
NOTE: If engine does not start, check engine oil level.
Engine will not start with low or no engine oil.
6. Pull starter handle slowly several times to allow
fuel to flow into carburetor. Then pull starter handle
gently until resistance is felt. Allow cable to retract
fully, and then pull it quickly. Repeat until engine
starts.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not allow starter handle to
snap back against engine. Continue to hold starter
handle through recoil.
