• Ifthepatientpullsviolentlyagainstthebedstraps;
• Toreducetheriskofthepatientgettingaccesstotheline/wound/tubesite;
• Topreventthepatientfromailingorbuckingupanddownandcausing
self-injury.
• Checkthepatientregularlytoensurethat:

 Circulationisnotimpaired.Seriousinjurymayoccurifthecusrestrict 
 circulation.

 Cusaresecure.Deathorseriousinjurytothepatientorothersmayoccur
 ifthepatientcanremovethecus.
MONITORING
• Poseyrecommendsconstantdirectsupervisionforpatientsdeemedtobeat
riskofinjurytothemselvesorothers.Fortimeswhendirectsupervisionisnot
possible,monitorbylineofsightorbyavideo/audiodevice.
• NEVERallowapatienttohaveaccesstoanytool,utensil,orobjectthatmight
beusedtounlockordamagecus.
• Beawarethatasuddenmoodswingmaycauseagitatedoraggressive
behavior.ContactthemedicalteamATONCEifthisoccurs.Nolevelof
monitoringmayavoidtheriskofseriousinjurytohighlyagitatedoraggressive
patients.

• ALWAYSuseHospitalBedSafetyWorkgroup
(HBSW)(http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/beds/modguide.
html)compliantsiderailsintheUPpositionandll
ALLgapstoreducetheriskofentrapment.
• Usesiderailcoversandgapprotectorstohelppreventthepatient’sbodyfrom
goingunder,around,throughorbetweenthesiderails.Afailuretodosomay
resultinseriousinjuryordeathifapatientbecomessuspendedorentrapped.

• Patientsassessedtobeatriskofdisruptinglife-savingtreatments(e.g.,chronictube
pulling).
• Patientsassessedtobeatriskoflinepulling,whichmaypreventmonitoringofvital
signs.
• Patientswhosepicking,pulling,scratching,orpeelingexacerbatesaskincondition,
causesself-injury,orcompromiseswoundsiteintegrity.

• NEVERuseonapatient:

• Withadislocationorfractureontherestrainedlimb;or

• IfanIVorwoundsitecouldbecompromisedbythedevice.
 SeethePoseyCatalogforotheroptionsforsuchapatient.
• DO NOTusethisdeviceonapatientwhoisorbecomes:suicidal;highlyaggressiveorcombative;self-destructive;ordeemed
tobeanimmediaterisktoothers,UNLESSthepatientisunderconstantsupervision.

• Beforeeachuse,checkcusandstrapsforcracks,tears,and/orexcessivewearor
stretch;crackedorbrokenbucklesorlocks;and/orthathookandloopadheres
securely,asthesemayallowpatienttoremovecu.Discardifdeviceisdamaged.
• Ifyouhaveanyquestionsaboutpatientsafety,asktheappropriatemedical
authorityforalternatives.
Followingthesestepstoapplydevice(repeatsteps1-5ontheotherlimb):
1. Wrapthecuaroundthepatient’slimb.
2. Insertthemetalpostthroughthemostsuitableadjustmenthole.
3. Securethelocktothepost.
4. Checkforpropertbyinsertingonengerbetweenthecusandthepatient’s
wristorankles.ecusmustbesnugenoughtopreventescape,butnot
interferewithcirculation.
5. Checkthatthelock“clicks”shut.Ifalockisnotcompletelyclosed,itcanpop
open.Beforeleavingthepatient’sside,testthelockbytryingtoopenitwithout
thekey.
ToUnlockCus:
1. InsertthePoseyKeyintothelockandturn
counterclockwise.iswillpreventjamming(g.1).

1. Looptheconnectingstrap(soldseparately)throughtheU-baronthecu.
2. Wrapthestraparoundamovablepartofthebedframe,outofthepatient’s
reach.Ensurethatthestrapiswrappedaroundtheframeatleastoncebefore
passingtheendofthestrapthroughthebuckleorlock.

PoseyKeysMUSTbereadilyavailabletostaatalltimes.Inanemergency,itis
diculttocutthecuswithscissorstofreethepatient.
NOTE:Keepexcessstrapoutofreachtopreventpatientfrompullingstrapand
damagingoropeninglock.
MONITORPERFACILITYPOLICY.Checktoensurethat:
• Strapscannotslideinanydirection,tightenorloosenifthepatientpullson
them,orifthebedisadjusted;
• Cusareattachedinawaythatthepatientisnotabletousehisorherteeth
orotherwiseremovethedevice;
• Cusareintact,andnottornordamaged.DONOTallowpatientstoingest
productmaterial.
Useextremecautionwhenusinganytypeofpaddingwiththelimbholder.Ifthe
patientpullsviolently,thepaddingmaycompressandallowthepatienttoremove
thecuandcauseinjurytohimself/herselforothers.
