INSTRUCTIONS
ADVERSE REACTIONS
• Severeemotional,psychological,orphysicalproblemsmayoccur:iftheapplieddeviceis
uncomfortable;orifitseverelylimitsmovement.Ifthepatientislikelytocauseinjurytohim/herselfor
others,gethelpfromaqualiedmedicalauthoritytondanalternateinterventionormethodofrestraint.
INDICATIONS FOR USE:
• Patientswhoareaggressiveandattemptto“buck”upanddown,riskingpotentialself-injuryor
disruptionoftreatment.
• Patientswhoneedasupplementalrestraint(5thpoint)ofthethighs,pelvis,orchest,andwhoare
alreadyrestrainedatallfourextremities.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
• NEVERusea5thpointrestraintonapatient:
• Withapelvicfracture,supra-pubiccatheter,ostomy;percutaneouslyplacedfeedingtubeorrecent
incision.
• Withahistoryofcardiacorpulmonarydisorders,orthoracicfractures.
• DO NOTusethisdeviceonapatientwhoisorbecomes:suicidal;highlyaggressiveorcombative;
self-destructive;ordeemedtobeanimmediaterisktoothers,UNLESSthepatientisunderconstant
supervision.
• Monitorperfacilitypolicytoensurethatthepatientcannotslidedown,orfallo
themattressandbecomesuspendedorentrapped(gs.2and3).
• ereisariskofchestcompressionorsuocation,ifthepatient’sbodyweightis
suspendedothemattress(gs.2and3).
PoseyKeysMUSTbereadilyavailabletostaatalltimes.Inanemergency,itisdicult
tocutthecuswithscissorstofreethepatient.
NOTE:Keepexcessstrapoutofreachtopreventpatientfrompullingstrapand
damagingoropeninglock.
• STOPUSEATONCE:ifthepatienthasatendencytoslideforwardordowninthe
device;orisabletoself-release.
NOTE:Arestraintwithapelvicpiecewillreducetheriskofsliding,orofthepatient
pullingthedeviceoverhisorherhead.SeePoseyCatalog.
MONITORING
• Poseyrecommendsconstantdirectsupervisionforpatientsdeemedtobeatriskof
injurytothemselvesorothers.Fortimeswhendirectsupervisionisnotpossible,
monitorbylineofsightorbyavideo/audiodevice.
• NEVERallowapatienttohaveaccesstoanytool,utensil,orobjectthatmightbe
usedtounlockordamagecus.
• Beawarethatasuddenmoodswingmaycauseagitatedoraggressivebehavior.
ContactthemedicalteamATONCEifthisoccurs.Nolevelofmonitoringmayavoid
theriskofseriousinjurytohighlyagitatedoraggressivepatients.
• NEVERleaveapatientrequiringa5thpointrestraintalone.One-on-onesupervision
isrequiredincaseofan
emergency.

• ALWAYSuseHospitalBedSafetyWorkgroup(HBSW)

compliantsiderailsintheUPpositionandllALLgaps
toreducetheriskofentrapment.
• Usesiderailcoversandgapprotectorstohelppreventthepatient’sbodyfrom
goingunder,around,throughorbetweenthesiderails.Afailuretodosomayresult
inseriousinjuryordeathifapatientbecomessuspendedorentrapped.Poseyoers
afullrangeofsiderailpadsand/orgapprotectorstocovergaps.

• Beforeeachuse,checkfortears,frayingorexcessivewear;orcrackedorbrokenbuckles
orlocks;and/orthathookandloopadheressecurely.Discardifdeviceisdamaged.
• Ifyouhaveanyquestionsaboutpatientsafety,asktheappropriatemedical
authorityforalternatives.
• Makesurepatientwearsproperundergarmentstoprotectskin.
Attachwristandanklerestraintstoaggressivepatientstokeephim/her
fromself-release.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
2219-Quick-ReleaseandLocking(repeatsteps2-4oneachside)
1. Positionthebeltoverthepatient’sthighs,pelvisorchest.
2. 2219-Looptheconnectingstrapattachedtothemaleendofthequick-releasebuckle
aroundamovablepartofthebedframe,outofthepatient’sreach,andthenclosethe
quick-releasebuckle.Listenfora“snapping”sound.
2219L-Looptheconnectingstraparoundamovablepartofthebedframe,outofthe
patient’sreach.Passtheendofthestrapthroughthelock.Ensurethatthestrapis
wrappedaroundtheframeatleastoncebeforepassingtheendofthestrapthrough
thelock.Leavenomorethan1”(3cm)ofexcessstrapstickingoutofthelock.Pulling
onexcessstrapmayallowthepatienttodamagethelock.
3. 2219-Adjustthetensionofthestrapbyreleasingonesideandadjustingthelengthof
thestrapbetweenthemaleandfemaleendsofthequick-releasebuckle.Pullrmlyon
strapstoensureagoodconnection.
2219L-Pullrmlyonthestraptoverifythatthelockissecure
4. ebeltmustbesnug,butnotinterferewithbreathing.Tocheckforpropert,slidean
openhand(at)betweenthebeltandthepatient.
NOTE:Whenusingoverthechest,thestrapsshouldgounderthearmsandattachat
chestlevel,toamovablepartofthebedframe.iswillpreventpatientfromslidingdown
andbecomingentangled.
TOUNLOCK:
1. InsertthePoseyKeyintothelockandturn
counterclockwise.iswillpreventjamming(g.1).
