ROPE SAFETY and CARE
READ CAREFULLY BEFORE USE
A. Safety warnings
Your safety and the safety of others are very important.
Serious injury can occur if you do not use this product correctly.
Make sure your rope size is adequate for the job. Do not use a rope that is too small.
KNOW THE WORKING LOAD LIMIT OF YOUR ROPE. Refer to the Cordage Institute’s
International Guideline on the safer use of the fiber rope (CI 1401) publication to
determine the working load limit for your application available at www.ropecord.com.
Avoid sudden strains. Shock loading such as jerking may cause failure of a rope
normally strong enough to handle the load.
Stretch equals danger!
A stretched rope can recoil and cause serious burns as the rope leaves your hand.
All ropes stretch: a longer one more than a shorter one. The more you pull, the more it
stretches.
A stretched rope can also move the load in an unpredictable or dangerous way.
A stretched rope can recoil and bring your hand towards the winch causing severe injuries.
NEVER WRAP THE ROPE AROUND YOUR HAND.
Always wear gloves.
B. Basic information on use and maintenance of fibre ropes
I. Inspection:
a. Inspect the rope immediately after purchase, and before and after each use, for any visual
damage (refer to rope inspection check list below).
b. Rope loses strength as it becomes worn. It is inadvisable to use worn rope. Use only rope in
good condition, without cuts, kinks, knots or pulled strands. Protect rope form chafe abrasion-
use over rough surfaces. Distribute any wear by occasionally reversing the rope.
II. Uncoiling:
a. When removing a rope from a coil, one should start with the end from the inside. The rope
should run out counter-clockwise. If the rope is pulled out clockwise, kinks will occur. If that
happens, re-place the length of rope back into the coil, turn the coil over and pull from the center
again. Now the rope should run out counter-clockwise and thus kink-free.
