Introduction 3 Welcome to your VCR instruction book. This book shows you how to hook up your VCR, then explains all the things the VCR can do. There’s also some information for your parents or another adult - just in case you have questions about your VCR. The instructions explain all of the VCR’s features, which are listed below. You cannot hurt your VCR by trying the features! So read on – and have fun.

Before Using Your VCR 5 Putting Batteries in the Remote Control 1 1 2 2 3 3 Remove the battery compartment lid on the bottom of the remote control by pressing the tab, then lifting the lid. Insert two AA batteries inside the battery compartment with their + and – ends placed as shown in the picture at right. Replace the battery compartment lid. Using the Remote Control Holder When you do not use the remote control, keep it in the remote control holder (supplied).
Using the Alarm Clock Putting Batteries in the Alarm Clock 1 2 3 1 2 3 Remove the battery compartment lid on the back of the alarm clock. Use your finger or fingernail to flip down the lid. Insert one AA battery inside the battery compartment with its + and – ends placed as shown in the picture at right. Replace the battery compartment lid.
Hookups Without a Cable Box / Direct Broadcast System 7 The easiest connection – just a TV, VCR, and antenna or cable – is shown below. If you have a Cable Box or a Direct Broadcast System, please see pages eight-nine. If you have a Stereo TV, please see page 10. After you hook up the VCR, go to page 11 to turn on the VCR. 1 Antenna Indoor/Outdoor (300 ohm) Disconnect the antenna or cable from your TV.
Hookups With a Cable Box/Direct Broadcast System There are two ways to connect your Cable Box/DBS to the VCR. With this connection: ● You may view any channel. ● You must select channels at the Cable Box/DBS. Channels cannot be changed at the VCR. ● You may not view a channel other than the one you are recording. ● You may not program channels at the VCR. ● You can only program a timer recording for one channel at a time.

Then, connect the other end of the video cable to the VIDEO IN Jack on your TV.
Turning on Your VCR 11 ● Before turning on your VCR, make sure there are batteries in the remote control and the VCR and TV are connected (see pages five and seven-10). ● You can not set up channels if you are using a Cable Box/DBS. ● The instructions on this page only work when you turn on the VCR for the first time. If there is a power failure or if the VCR is unplugged for more than one minute, you may need to repeat the instructions on this page. 2 1 Turn on the TV. Set it to channel 3 or 4.
Automatic TV Channel Setup Although your VCR may automatically set up the TV channels you receive when you turn it on for the first time, this function lets you set up channels again. Make sure: ● The VCR is on and is in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will appear on the front of the VCR. If it does not, press the VCR/TV button once.) 1 POWER CHANNEL Press the MENU button until the main menu appears.
Automatic TV Channel Setup (cont’d) 13 Adding/Deleting Channels The channels you no longer receive or seldom watch can be deleted from the memory. You also may add new channels into the memory. Make sure: ● The VCR is on and in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will appear. If it does not, press the VCR/TV button once.) 2-3 1 POWER Press the MENU button until the main menu appears.
Setting the VCR Clock Follow the steps below to set your VCR’s internal clock. Make sure: ● The VCR is on and in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will appear. Choosing a Language Follow the steps below to change the language of the on-screen menus and displays. Make sure: ● The VCR is on and in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will appear. If it does not, press the VCR/TV button once.) 1 Press the MENU button until the main menu appears. On-Screen Displays 17 You may access on-screen displays by pressing the DISPLAY button repeatedly. On-screen displays may include the current time, channel, and other information. ● Press the DISPLAY button once. The COUNT information will appear for five seconds. After five seconds, only the real-time counter will appear on the screen. This counter shows you the elapsed playing time of the tape (from the point at which the real-time counter was set to zero). ● Press the DISPLAY button once again.
Remote Control Buttons POWER Button Press to turn the VCR on or off. POWER CHANNEL PAUSE PLAY Button Press to play a tape. Also, press to release a frozen picture or forward and reverse searching and return to normal playback. Details are on page 34. Use to enter information in the menu (setting the clock, for example). Press to select an item in the menu. PLAY STOP REW(ind) Button When tape playback is stopped, press to rewind the tape at high speed.
Remote Control Buttons (cont’d) 19 CHANNEL o/p Button Press to scan up or down through the available channels after the channels have been set up. Details are on page 12. POWER CHANNEL PAUSE Button During recording, press to temporarily stop the recording. Press again to resume recording. Details are on page 24. You can not pause a One-Touch Recording. Details are on page 25. During tape playback, press to pause the picture. Each press of the PAUSE button will cause the noise lines to move on the screen.
VCR Display Panel VCR Display Panel These lights explain the current activity of the VCR. Cassette Compartment Insert a video cassette tape here. Do not place anything else in this compartment. PLAY PAUSE STOP/EJECT RECORD POWER VCR/TV CST.IN TIMER REW F.FWD REC POWER CHANNEL Alarm Clock Details are on page six. POWER VCR/TV POWER Light This light appears when the VCR power is on. VCR/TV Light This light appears when the VCR is in VCR position. Details are on page 19. CST.
Front Panel 21 PAUSE Button While recording, press to temporarily stop the recording. Press a second time to resume normal recording. Details are on page 24. You can not pause a One-Touch Recording. Details are on page 25. During tape playback, press to pause the picture. Each press of the PAUSE button will cause the noise lines to move on the screen. Press the PLAY button to resume normal playback. Details are on page 34.
Back Panel ANT(enna) IN Jack Connect your antenna or cable here. Details are on pages seven-10. AUDIO IN Jack Connect an audio cable coming from the audio out jack of a camcorder, another VCR, or an audio source here. Details are on page 32. AUDIO OUT Jack Connect an audio cable going to the audio in jack of a TV, camcorder, another VCR, or an audio system here. Details are on pages 10 and 32.
Playing 23 Read and follow the steps below to play a tape. 1 Turn on the TV and set it to channel 3 or 4, whichever channel to which the CH3/CH4 switch on the back of the VCR is set. 2 1 2 6 Turn on the TV. Insert a tape. Press the STOP/EJECT button on the VCR. Insert a tape in the VCR. The POWER, VCR/TV, and CST.IN lights will appear. If the tape’s record tab has been removed, playback will begin automatically. (Tab details are on page five.
Recording Read and follow the steps below to record a television program. 1 Turn on the TV; set it to channel 3 or 4, whichever channel the CH3/CH4 switch on the back of the VCR is set to. 1 2 Turn on the TV. Insert a tape. 2 Insert a tape with its record tab intact (see page five) in the VCR. The POWER, VCR/TV, and CST.IN lights will appear. 3 POWER CHANNEL 7 PLAY If the VCR/TV light does not appear, press the VCR/TV button so that the VCR/TV light appears.
One-Touch Recording 25 One-Touch Recording (OTR) lets you record for 30 minutes to eight hours. Before you begin, make sure: ● Channels are set up. Details are on page 12. ● The desired recording speed (SP, SLP) has been selected with the SPEED button. Details are on page 42. ● There is a tape in the VCR. Make sure the tape’s record tab is intact and the tape is long enough to record the program(s). Details are on page five. ● The VCR is in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will appear.
Timer Recording Follow the steps below to make your VCR record TV programs while you’re away from home. You can have up to seven timer recordings. For each one, the VCR will turn itself on, record, and turn itself off automatically. Before you begin make sure: ● Channels are set up. Details are on page 12. ● The VCR clock is set. Details are on pages 14-15. ● There is a tape in the VCR. Make sure the tape’s record tab is intact and the tape is long enough to record the program(s).
Timer Recording (cont’d) 27 4 Press the PLAY button or the STOP button repeatedly until the desired month appears. Then, press the F.FWD button. Next, press the PLAY button or the STOP button repeatedly until the desired day appears. Then, press the F.FWD button. The day of the week will appear automatically. You can not program the VCR to record more than one year in advance.
Timer Recording (cont’d) 7 Press the PLAY button or the STOP button repeatedly until the desired channel number appears. Then, press the F.FWD button. ● If you are using a standard antenna/cable hookup (as shown on page seven), select the channel of the TV program you want to record. ● If you are recording from line input, select L1. (LineIn Rear (L1) is located at the channel 00.) You should have the VCR connected to other video equipment. Details are on page 32.
Timer Recording (cont’d) 29 Cancelling a Timer Recording 1 Press the MENU button so that the details of your program appear on the screen. If there are no recordings set, the main menu will appear. Timer Recording (cont’d) Correcting a Timer Recording If you need to correct a timer recording after you have finished setting the program, follow these steps. Make sure the VCR is on and is in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will appear. If it does not, press the VCR/TV button once.) 2&5 1 Press the MENU button so that the details of your programs appear on the screen. If there are no recordings set, the main menu will appear.
Recording One Channel/Watching Another 31 1 Press the RECORD button to start a recording of the current channel. Details are on page 24. 2 3 4 Select the channel you want to watch at the TV. Set the TV to channel 3 or 4. Press the VCR/TV button to put the VCR in TV position. The VCR/TV light will disappear. POWER CHANNEL 3 PAUSE PLAY Use the TV remote control to select the channel you want to watch at the TV. 4 STOP 6 F.
Rerecording (Copying Tapes) 1. Audio cable from AUDIO OUT Jack of VCR 1 to AUDIO IN Jack of VCR 2 VCR 1 Playing VCR VCR 2 - Recording VCR ANT ANT IN IN AUDIO OUT IN VIDEO 1 AUDIO OUT OUT IN CH3 CH4 VIDEO 2. Video cable from VIDEO OUT Jack of VCR 1 to VIDEO IN Jack of VCR 2 OUT CH3 CH4 3. RF coaxial cable from the OUT jack of VCR2 to the TV’s ANTENNA IN Jack VCR 1 will play your tape. Insert a prerecorded tape in VCR 1. If the tape does not have a record tab, playback begins.
Repeat Play 33 Follow the steps below to make the VCR play a tape over and over. Make sure: ● The VCR is on and is in VCR position. The VCR/TV light will appear on the front of the VCR. Forward and Reverse Searching/Pausing a Picture Forward and Reverse Searching (SP/LP/SLP) 1 During tape playback, press and release the F.FWD button or the REW(ind) button. A fast forward or reverse picture search will begin. 2 To return to playback, press the PLAY button. POWER CHANNEL PAUSE PLAY Super High Speed Searching (LP/SLP) 1 STOP During tape playback, press the F.FWD button or the REW(ind) button, then press again. The VCR will now search in super high speed. Picture Select 35 You can select the picture quality of a tape. Make sure: ● The VCR is on and is in VCR position. The VCR/TV light will appear. Real-Time Counter Memory Follow the steps below to reset the real-time counter to zero at a tape location you want to refer to later. Make sure: ● The VCR is on and is in VCR position. The VCR/TV light will appear. If it does not, press the VCR/TV button once. ● There is a tape in the VCR. 1 POWER CHANNEL Play, fast forward, or rewind a tape to the location that you would like to refer to later. Press the STOP button to stop the tape. 2 PAUSE PLAY 4 STOP Press the EXIT/C.
Automatic Playback Features 37 Automatic Playback When you put a tape in the VCR, the power will come on automatically. If the tape’s record tab is missing, playback will begin. (If a timer recording is set, you may have to press the POWER button to turn on the VCR. Make sure you turn off the VCR for the timer recording later. If you insert a tape without a record tab when a timer recording is set, the VCR will eject the tape.

If you need to call a customer service representative, please know the model number and serial number of your product before you call. This information is displayed on the back of the product. Helpful Hints (cont’d) 39 Tape cannot be removed. • Make sure the power plug is completely connected to an AC (alternating current) outlet. • You have set a timer recording. Turn on the VCR power, then eject the tape. Be sure to insert a tape and turn off the VCR for your timer recording. Tape cannot be inserted. • Insert the tape, window side up, with the record tab facing you. • Make sure a tape isn’t already in the VCR by pressing the STOP/EJECT button on the VCR.

Dictionary/Specifications Dictionary Specifications AUDIO IN/OUT Jacks: jacks located on the back of the VCR which are used to record audio from another source (IN) or to send audio to another system (OUT). Automatic Channel Setup: process in which the VCR scans all available TV channels and places the ones you receive in its memory. Then, when you push the CHANNEL o/p button, you only scan through channels you receive. Bands: settings that allow you to tune channels.
