OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS PHILIPS VR 258 Congratulations! You are now the owner of one of the most sophisticated and simpleton-use video recorders (VCR) on the market. With this VCR you can record and play VHS standard cassettes. But please allow me to introduce myself. | am Philip and [ should like to help you to get to know your new video recorder, Naturally, you can't wait to use it, but before you do, it's worthwhile taking the time to read through the whole of this operating manual.
1. SUMMARY OF BUTTONS AND CONTROLS You will find detailed descriptions of the various functions in the relevant chapters.

2. INSTALLATION. HOW DO | INSTALL THE VIDEO RE- CORER? Important for the United Kingdom This apparatus is fitted with an approved molded 13 Amp plug. To change a fuse in this type of plug proceed as follows: © Remove fuse cover and fuse. © Fix new fuse which should be a B81362 3A, A.S.T.A. or BS! approved type. € Refit the fuse cover. If the fitted plug is not suitable for your socket outlets, it should be cut off and an appropriate plug fitted in its place.
How to insert the batteries into the remote control @ Remove the cover from the back of the remote control. To do this, press the sides of the cover together and, simultaneously, slide it down. @ Insert the batteries as indicated into the battery compartment and close the cover. Note: * For the remote control to function properly, you must always point it directly at the set. To connect your video recorder The [EXT Scarlet socket has an outputting function.
= cEE Connecting to the aerial Your video recorder is actually a TV set without a screen’. Therefore, you must connect it to the aerial as well as to the TV set. Only then can you record TV programmed and play recorded cassettes. © Remove the aerial cable plug from your TV set and insert it into the socket I lat the back of the video recorder. © Plug one end of the aerial cable provided anti the (& }socket on the video recorder and the other end into the aerial input socket on your TV set.
Connecting to the mains power supply @ Insert the female plug of the mains cable into the mains socket =T at the back of the video recorder. © Plug the other end of the mains cable into the wall socket. Your video recorder is now fully connected to the TV set. Some general notes for subsequent operation * Keep your video recorder connected to the mains at all times to ensure that programmed recordings can be made and that the television functions. The power consumption required for this is very low.
o m‘r@ T Connecting a decoder Some TV broadcasters transmit encoded television programmed which you can only see with a purchased or rented decoder. You can connect such a decoder {scrambler) to this video recorder. € Connect the decoder to the video recorder with a scary cable ((XTZ Socket. You will find a description of how to combine the storage of TV channels with the decoder in the chapter *Storing TV channels’. Note: * You cannot use the decoder with your video recorder and your TV set simultaneously.
Emergency interrupt Both the set and the remote control have an "Emergency interrupt’ button. You can use the button to interrupt any function. Whenever you have operating problems you can simply interrupt the function and start again. You can practice operating your set without any worries. No matter which buttons you press, you cannot damage it. Making standard settings You can make various standard settings here, e.g. display language, frequency/channel number display, ‘Direct Record’ on/off.
10 Setting the clock and date on the video recorder ' In order to be able to programmer recordings, you must first ensure that the video recorder clock is correctly set, To do this, use the (& Tor C¥ Button or the digit buttons [B-81on the remote control in all the following steps. € Press the [CLOCKWISE ] button on the remote control. “TIME” will appear in the video recorder display. Set the current time. & Press the [OK Button. ‘YEAR’ will appear in the display. Set the current year.
3. STORING TV CHANNELS For the video recorder to be able to record TV programmed you must first store the TV channels 1) in the video recorder. You can store channels. Your video recorder has its own receiver. This means that it can be used independently of the TV set. Automatic Channel Search (Follow TV) The video recorder will search for all TV channels at the same time.
12 © Confirm with the CGK Button on the remote control for the video recorder. The video recorder compares the TV channels on the TV set and the video recorder. If the video recorder has the same TV channel 'P 071’) as the TV set, then it stores it € Wait until, e.g., "SELECT TV P 02° appears in the display. © Select, either on the TV set or with the remote control for the TV set, the next programmer number, e.g. 2.
Allocating channel numbers (Programmer Preset) You can allocate any desired programmer number to the TV channels stored by the ‘Automatic Channel Search’. For example, so that they are in the same sequence as on the TV set. @ Switch on your TV set. Many TV sets switch automatically to the programmer number for the video recorder at step €. However, this will only function if your video recorder is connected to the TV set with a scary cable.

"STORED” will appear briefly in the display. if you wish to delete an unwanted TV channel, press the [CLEAR | button instead of the [OK Button. if you wish to assign a television channel a second time, press the button instead of the (0K button. © The video recorder will now display the next programmer number, ‘P 02". Repeat steps € and @ until you have numbered all the TV channels.
D e Manual channel search In certain cases the Automatic Channel Search may not be able to find all of the TV channels {e.g. coded TV channels}. You can then use this manual method to set the channels. @ Switch on the TV set and select the programmer number for the video recorder. © Tress the [TONER Button on the remote control. © Press the [ PROGRAMMER PRESET Button on the video recorder for more than five seconds.
16 © Press the (0K Button on your remote control. © Use the T¥ Jor L& Button on your video recorder to select the programmer number that you wish to allocate to this TV channel. © Press the (PROGRAMMER PRESET lout ton. The TV channel is now stored. © Repeat steps @ to @ until you have stored all of the TV channels. © Switch the video recorder to standby by pressing the button.
4. PLAYING A RECORDED CASSETTE In Chapter 2 you connected the video recorder to the TV set. Playing a cassette is now very simple. If you want to record something straight away, first read Chapter 5. @ Switch on the TV set. Many TV sets switch automatically to the programmer number for the video recorder when a cassette is played back. However, this only works if the video recorder is connected to the TV set with.a scary cable.
18 Fast wind and rewind @ Stop the tape. Press the [LIC] (Rewind) or {Wind} button. The tape is wound at high speed, © Press the [ Button as soon as you have reached the required position on the tape. Picture scanning You can select from various speeds for scanning backwards or forwards. © Press the [PLAY Button, © Now press the [ SPEED Jor [_SPEED 5] button as offend as necessary until you have reached the desired speed. The display will show e.g. ‘SCAN’, .
A, Still picture @ Press the CLAY Button on the remits control. © Press the [STICK Button. The picture will stand still, Interference stripes will appear at the edge of the picture, : Each time you press [STILL ®M Again the picture will move on one step. © Press the [FLAY Attribution to continue playing back at the normal speed. Special note: * If the still picture vibrates vertically, keep pressing the [CRACKING B Hutton until the vibration is minimal.
20 Tape position. How do | know where | am on the tape? The tape length will be indicated in minutes, e.g.: "E180° corresponds to 180 minutes of playing time hours}. You will find the length printed on the left of the narrow front edge. The actual length, however, may be a little longer (e.g. 3:05 hours) than indicated. if you want to check the time left on the cassette, press the [(CASSETTE button, The time left is briefly displayed.
e — @ Press the LE EXT ¥ Button to select the next code mark or the [ PREVIOUS Hutton for the previous code mark. Either ‘NEXT' or "PREVIOUS’ will appear in your video recorder display. © Once the video recorder finds the code mark it will automatically switch to playback. Note: * When you press any tape transport button the LB_Jor [ button) this search function will be stopped. * You cannot use this function with recordings made on another video recorder that does not have this function.
5. HOW DO | RECORD DIRECTLY? you want to record, then this is how to go about it: © Insert a cassette. The video recorder will switch on automatically. You can also switch it on with the [ Button. © Use the C& Jor (¥ Button to select the programmer number from which you wish to record, e.g. ‘P01, € When you wish to start recording, press the [_RECORD® button on your set. If you use the remote control, press the (0K Jan [RECGED® | buttons simultaneously. This protects against erroneous recording.
* If, when you want to make a recording, you have accidentally loaded a cassette with erase protection, the warning 'PROTECTED SACS’ will appear. The cassette will be automatically ejected. * If the end of the cassette is reached during recording, the cassette will be automatically ejected. The set will then switch to standby after a few minutes. * When you make a new recording on a video cassette, it will automatically record over and delete any recordings already on the cassette.
] Long play function You can reduce the recording speed by half. This makes it possible to record, for example, 8 hours instead of 4 hours on an 'E240’ cassette. © Before recording, select the ‘LP’ (=Long Play) recording speed by pressing the [SPILL Button. ‘LP’ will appear in the display. @ During playback the video recorder will automatically select the correct playback speed.
6. HOW DO | PROGRAMMER A RECORDING? In this chapter you will learn how to programmer your video recorder. It switches itself on automatically, records the TV programmer you want and then automatically switches itself off again.
s S What are PDC (Programmer Delivery Control) and VP$ (Video Programming System)? With VPS and PDC, the TV station controls when the video recorder is switched on and off. This means that the video recorder switches itself on and off at the right time even if a TV programmer you have programmed begins earlier or finishes later than expected. Assuming, that is, that the TV station actually transmits VPS or PDC. ' Not all TV stations transmit a VPS or PDC signal.
Programming with Videophone With this method the programming will be as easy as dialing a telephone number. You only have to enter the V'DE ‘Videophone code’ (3 to 9 digits) printed in your TV guide next to the start time of a TV programmer. Make sure that a cassette without erase protection has been loaded. © Press the [VIBE PLUS bellybutton on the remote control. R ] The remote control display shows a series of dashes.
28 Note: * If the programmer number flashes, e.g.: 'P 01, you must confirm the programmer number contained in the ‘Videophone code’, by pressing the [0 Button. For P 05 and above, select the correct programmer number with the L& Lorre (¥ Button and press the [OK Button. The video recorder stores this allocation 05). From now on it will use it for all Videophone programming for this channel, * [f you use VPS or PDC, 'VPS/PDC’ must appear in the display. Switch VPS/PDC on or off with the button.
Programming on the remote control You can enter data in the remote control for one recording at a time. The remote control display will show all the data simultaneously. Use the four on the remote control to enter the data. Make sure that you have loaded a cassette without erase protection in the video recorder. © Press the TIMER BC@ pollution, The last data you entered will appear in the remote control display. Change the data in any sequence you choose: s Set the date of the recording with the button.

The video recorder display will show all the data simultaneously. Use the four Bellybuttons on the remote control to enter the data. The data will be steed in the video recorder in the next free TIMER block. Make sure you have not loaded a cassette with erase protection. © Press the “Hutton on the remote control.
e L — General programming notes Press the [STANLEY T I Hutton on the remote control if you want to stop programming instead of transmitting the TIMER data in the remote control to the video recorder. The programmed recording will always be made at the recording speed (SP/LP} that has already been selected on the video recorder. TIMER recording will only function when the video recorder is switched off.
32 How do | record from a satellite tuner? You can also programmer recordings from an external satellite tuner. @ Connect the tuner to the TEXTILE Socket. Make sure that the tuner is switched on and that the correct SAT channel has been selected. © Use one of the two available programming methods to programmer a TIMER block. Use programmer number ’E 2 in the programming procedure for this external recording source.
ST How do | check or correct a TIMER block? O Press the [ TIMER BEVIES ] button on the remote control, © Now press the [_TIMESERVER Button as often as necessary until the TIMER block you want to check or correct appears in the video recorder display. The TIMER blocks will appear in chronological order in the display. © Now press the buttons [DATE 7=, [ [START Z7=1, (BB F7= lto change the recording date, programmer number, start time or stop time. You can switch VPS/PDC on and off.
7. SPECIAL FEATURES ON YOUR VIDEO RECORDER 34 Apart from the functions that have already been described, your set has other special functions and extras designed to make the use of your set as convenient as possible. In this chapter you will find out more about them, Tuner mode. Your video recorder as an extension of your TV set You can also use your video recorder as a TV receiver {tuner).
e — VCR 1/VCR 2 switch-over This is an important function if you have two video recorders which accept the same remote control code, So as to prevent the unintentional operation of the wrong video recorder, you can quite easily change the cremate control code for this video recorder and this remote control. @ With the video recorder switched off, press the [DECEIT & Jan [ Buttons simultaneously. There must not be an inserted cassette. @ Press the [OK Button.
A S ST View Mode When you connect another appliance to the CEXTZ"] socket you will be able to use the following additional functions. The appliance can be a second video recorder, a decoder, a satellite receiver or a CD video player. « Thus, if the second appliance transmits a control signal, for example, during playback, the (switched on) video recorder will recognize it and automatically switch to "View Mode’. You can switch View Mode on and off with the button.
S Externally controlled TIMER recording Do you have another device, e.g. a satellite receiver, which can control other equipment by a TIMER function? This video recorder can be remote-controlled via socket TEXTILE |, ’ © Switch off with the [_STAR BEY ® T (remote control) button, @ Press the [MONITOR Button unit 'RECORD PREPARED’ appears in the display. The video recorder is now ready to record.
Insert the recorded cassette into VCR A and a free cassette into VCR B. © Now select programmer number ‘E 2 on VCR B. This is found near to programmer number ‘P 01 (P01 2}, To do this, use the T2 Jor ¥ Ablution. O To start recording, press the recording button [TRECORD® lon VCR B and the playback button (8] on VCR A, © When you want to finish copying, press the stop button [ lon both video recorders.
© Tune in the TV set in the UHF wave band until this test picture appears. The video recorder is tuned to UHF channel 36 in our factory. in order to find out how to tune to the right channel and to store this on your TV set, please consult the operating manual for your TV set. Note: * Check the sound and picture quality of reception on your TV set next time you play back from the video recorder. If necessary you can improve the picture, color and sound by adjusting the channel on your TV set.
40 @ Re-tune the TV set to the video recorder (steps @ to @) until the test picture re-appears. @ Check all the TV channels on your TV set again. Repeat the channel adjustment (steps © and &) until the picture quality is the same whether the video recorder is on or off. @ Switch off the video recorder with the button. Note: *If you have not yet set the time/date and the display language as described in Chapter 2, ‘INSTALLATION’, turn to that chapter to do so.
