OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS PHILIPS VR 247 Congratulations! You are now the owner of one of the most sophisticated and simple-to-use video recorders (VCR) on the market. But please allow me to introduce myself. | am Philip and i should like to help you to get to know your new video recorder. Naturally, you can't wait to use it, but before you do, it’s worthwhile taking the time to read through the whole of this operating manual. It will show you how to make the best use of your equipment.
1. SUMMARY OF BUTTONS AND CONTROLS Here is a list of all the buttons, controls and sockets that you will find on the set and the remote control. You will find detailed descriptions concerning the various functions in the relevant chapters.
Safety instructions Danger high voltage in this appliance! Do not open! The video recorder does not contain any parts that can be repaired by the user. As long as the sites connected to the mains there are parts of it still in operation. To switch off the set completely you must disconnect it from the mains. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any damage which is incurred by not using the stein compliance with the national guarantee conditions and safety regulations.
Precautions . The set should not be used immediately after transportation from a cold to a hot area or vice versa, or in conditions of extreme humidity. After unpacking the set, it should be allowed to acclimatize for at least three hours before installation. Do not place the set near other electrical appliances that generate strong magnetic fields motors, loud speakers or transformers). Do not use the set in dusty places or where it may be subject to vibration.
Important for the United Kingdom This apparatus is fitted with an approved molded 13 Amp plug. To change a fuse in this type of plug proceed as follows: © Remove fuse cover and fuse. © Fix new fuse which should be a B$1363 3A, A.S.T.A. or BSI approved type. © Refit the fuse cover.
2. INSTALLATION. HOW DO | INSTALL MY VIDEO RECORDER? How to insert the batteries into the remote control @ Remove the cover from the back of the remote control. To do this, press the sides of the cover together and, simultaneously, slide it down. © Insert the batteries as indicated into the battery compartment and close the cover. Note: * Do not use rechargeable batteries in this remote control. * For the remote control to function properly, you must always point it directly at the set.
Connecting to the mains power supply © Insert the fern ale plug of the mains cable into the mains socket [(Latham the back of the video recorder. © Plug the other end of the mains cable into the wall socket. Some general notes for subsequent operation + Keep your video recorder connected to the mains at all times to ensure that programmed recordings can be made and that the television functions. The power consumption required for this is very low.
S Connecting to the TV set If your television does not have a scary (AV-Euro) socket please do not read further here but turn to Chapter 7, ‘Special functions and extras’. In the section ‘Playback via the aerial cable’ you will find further information. @ Plug the orange-marked plug of the scary cable provided into the orange-colored scary socket [EXT T at the back of your video recorder. Connect the other end to the TV set.
Connecting a decoder Some TV broadcasters transmit encoded television signals which you can only see with a purchased or rented decoder, You can connect such a decoder {scrambler) to this video recorder, © Connect the decoder to the video recorder with a scary cable (EXT Socket. You will find a description of how to combine the storage of TV channels with the decoder in the chapter "Storing TV channels’. Note: * You cannot use the decoder with your video recorder and your TV set simultaneously.

3. STORING TV CHANNELS For the video recorder to be able to record TV programmed you must first store the TV channels ‘BBC 17} in the video recorder. You can store channels. Your video recorder has its own receiver. This means that it can be used independently of the TV set. Automatic channel search The video recorder will search for all TV channels at the same time. It stores them in its memory in the order in which it finds them. © Switch on the TV set.

Repeat steps @ and @ until you have numbered all the TV channels, © When you have finished, press the PROGRAMMER PRESET button on your video recorder. Note: * Unused {free} programmer numbers cannot be selected, * If you wish to delete an unwanted TV channel, press the [ PROGRAMMABLE |button, Then, select the associated programmer number and press the button.
T —— Manual channel search In certain cases the Automatic Channel Search may not be able to find all of the TV channels {e.g. coded TV channels). You can then use this manual method to set the channels. @ Switch on the TV set and select the programmer number for the video recorder. © Press the (TORE I button on the remote control. oA T © Press the (PROGRAMMER _PRESET | Hutton on the video AL LT palatine recorder for more than five seconds.
4. PLAYING A RECORDED CASSETTE T 4 T FULL T 51’.: LI In Chapter 2 you connected the video recorder to the TV set. Playing a cassette is now very simple. If you want to record something straight away, first read Chapter 5. € Switch on the TV set. Many TV sets switch automatically to the, programmer number for the video recorder when a cassette is played back. However, this only works if the video recorder is connected to the TV set with a scary cable.
T — Fast wind and rewind O Press the button. Press the ["SPEED ] (Rewind) or {Wind) button. The tape is wound at high speed. Press the button as soon as you have reached the required position on the tape. Picture scanning You can select from various speeds for scanning backwards or forwards. @ Press the button. @ Now press the LS4 SPEED lor [_SPEED®E button [ v =111 Fromm LP Li as often as necessary until you have reached the desired speed.
LI (A i Still picture @ Press the (PLAY Button on the remote control, © Press the [STEEL ¥ button. The picture will stand stifle. Interference stripes will appear at the edge of the picture. These are not an indication of a malfunction. Each time you press [TEL B again the picture will move on one step. © Press the (FINLAY button to continue playing back at the normal speed. Special note: * If the still picture vibrates vertically, keep pressing the button until the vibration is minimal.
e — Tape position. How do | know where | am on the tape? It is handy to know how long a tape has been playing. First enter the length of the loaded cassette. This must be done if the correct playing time is to be indicated. The tape length will be indicated in minutes, e.g.: ‘E180° corresponds to 180 minutes of playing time. You will find the length printed on the left of the narrow front edge. The actual length, however, may be a little longer than indicated.
Searching for a tape position Sometimes you may have recorded two or more TV programmed or ong cassette. So that you do not have to spend time searching, your set offers you an automatic search facility. The video recorder marks the tape with a code mark every time you start to record. You can search for these code marks on the tape using the PREVIOUS Jan buttons on your cremate control. © Press the NEXT ® Th button to select the next code mark or the L€ PREVIOUS Button for the previous code mark.
5. HOW DO | RECORD DIRECTLY? The easiest way to record is to directly record a TV programmer that is currently being transmitted. And this is how to go about it: @ Insert a cassette. The video recorder will switch on automatically. You can also switch it on with the © Use the L& Jor ¥ Button to select the programmer number from which you wish to record, e.g.: ‘P 01, If you wish to record at a different speed (SP/LP), press the [SPILL Button on your remote control.
* If you accidentally load a cassette with erase protection and try to record on it, the warning ‘PROTECTED SACS’ will appear. After a few seconds the cassette will be automatically ejected. * {f the end of the cassette is reached during recording, the cassette will be automatically ejected. The set will then switch itself off after a few minutes.
L — Long play function You can reduce the recording speed by half. This makes it possible to record, for example, 8 hours instead of 4 hours on an 'E240" cassette. @ Before recording, select the 'LP’ {=Long Play) recording speed by pressing the [APSE button. ‘LP’ will appear in the display. © During playback the video recorder will automatically select the correct playback speed.
6. HOW DO | PROGRAMMER A RECORDING? Q W‘« In this chapter you will [earn how fo programmer your N a2 video recorder. It switches itself on automatically, X records the TV programmer you want and then b automatically switches itself off again.
Programming with Video plus + With this method the programming will be as easy as dialing a telephone number. You only have to enter the 'Videophone code’ (3 to 9 digits) printed in your TV guide next to the start time of a TV programmer. Make sure that a cassette without erase protection has been loaded. @ Press the [VIDEO PLUS & button on the remote control. The remote control display shows a series of dashes. © Enter the entire "Video plus + code’ with the digit buttons [8=91.
Note: * [f the programmer number flashes, e.g.. 'E 27, the video recorder cannot connect the TV channel identification contained in the "Videophone code’ for BBC 1) with the programmer number in the video recorder ‘P 02'}. When this occurs, select the correct programmer number with the [PRIG. buttonwood and press the [Gr button. The video recorder stores this allocation BBC 1 = P 02). From now on it will use it for all Video plus + programming for this channel.
Programming on the remote control Use the four on the remote control to nraéch enter the data. Choose whether you want to use the @ O @ display in the remote control or the video recorder. DATE PRIG. END You can enter and store data for six recordings. o Make sure that you have loaded a cassette without erase protection in the video recorder. © If you want to use the remote control display, press @ @ the button. For the video recorder display, press the button.
Some general programming notes: # Press the [_STANDBY & button if you want to stop programming instead of transmitting the TIMER data in the remote control to the video recorder. * The programmed recording will always be made at the recording speed (SP/LP) that has already been selected on the video recorder. * TIMER recording will only function when the video recorder is switched off.
S How do | stop a TIMER recording? You cannot operate the set manually while a programmed recording is being made. If you want to stop the programmed recording, press the button. How do I check or correct a TIMER block? @ Press the [_TIMER REVIEW Button on the remote control. € Now press the [_TIMER BEVIES Button as often as necessary until the TIMER block you want to check or correct appears in the video recorder display. The TIMER blocks will appear in chronological order in the display. .
How do | clear a TIMER block? © Press the [_TIMER BEVIES button on the remote control. © Press the [TIMER REVIEW ] button as often as necessary until the TIMER block you want to clear appears in the video recorder display. © Press the PEARLIE Button. The TIMER block will be cleared, "TIMER CLEARED’ will appear in the video recorder display.
7. SPECIAL FEATURES AND EXTRAS ON YOUR VIDEO RECORDER Apart from the functions that have already been described, your video recorder has other special 7 functions and extras designed to make the use of your video recorder as convenient as possible. In this chapter you will find out more about them. r Tuner mode. Your video recorder as an extension of your TV set You can also use your video recorder as a TV receiver ( (tuner}.
View Mode When you connect another appliance to the socket you will be able to use the following additional functions. The appliance can be a second video recorder, a decoder, a satellite receiver or a CD video player. + Thus, if the second appliance transmits a control signal, for example, during playback, the (switched on) video recorder will recognize it and automatically switch to "View Mode". You can switch View Mode on and off with the button.
S Automatic switch-off if the video recorder is not aerated for a period of . several minutes during one of the following functions, the function will be switched off. This protects your cassette and prevents unnecessary power consumption, If the video recorder is: in 'STOP it switches off in ‘NG CASSETTE it switches off in 'STILL it switches to 'PLAY”" in, e.g.

To do this, use the CZxJor T Button, O To start recording, press the recording button [(RECCRD® lon VCR B and the playback button [E Lay Jon VCR A. © When you want to finish copying, press the stop button CE TOP Jon both video recorders.
© Tune in the TV set in the UHF wave band until this test picture appears. The video recorder is tuned to UHF channel 38 in our factory. in order to find out how to tune to the right channel and to store this on your TV set, please consult the operating manual for your TV set. Note: * Check the sound and picture quality of reception on your TV set next time you play back from the video recorder.
@ Re-tune the TV set to the video recorder {steps € 1o ©) until the test picture re-appears. @ Check all the TV channels on your TV set again. Repeat the channel adjustment [ MOD. REG] (steps @ and @) until the picture quality is the same whether the video recorder is on or off. @ Switch off the video recorder with the button. Note: *1f you have not yet set the time/date and the display language as described in Chapter 2, ‘INSTALLATION’, turn to that chapter to do so.
