OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS PHILIPS VR 242 Congratulations! You are now the owner of one of the most sophisticated and simple-to-use video recorders (VCR) on the market. But please allow me to introduce myself. | am Philip and | should like to help you to get to know your new video recorder. Naturally, you can't wait to use it, but before you do, it's worthwhile eking the time to read through the whole of this operating manual. it will show you how to make the bast use of your equipment.
1. SUMMARY OF BUTTONS AND CONTROLS Here is a list of all the buttons, controls and sockets that you will find on the set and the remote control. You will find detailed descriptions concerning the various functions in the relevant chapters.
Safety instructions . Danger high voltage in this appliance! Do not open! The video recorder does not contain any parts that can be repaired by the user. As long as the set is connected to the mains there are parts of it still in operation. To switch off the set completely you must disconnect it from the mains. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any damage which is incurred by not using the set in compliance with the national guarantee conditions and safety regulations.
Precautions . The set should not be used immediately after transportation from a cold to a hot area or vice versa, or in conditions of extreme humidity. After unpacking the set, it should be allowed to acclimatize for at least three hours before installation. Do not place the set near other electrical appliances that generate strong magnetic fields motors, loud speakers or transformers). Do not use the set in dusty places or where it may be subject to vibration.
2. INSTALLATION. HOW DO | INSTALL MY VIDEO RECORDER? How to insert the batteries into the remote control € Remove the cover from the back of the remote control. To do this, press the sides of the cover together and, simultaneously, slide it down. © Insert the batteries as indicated into the battery compartment and close the cover. Note: * Do not use rechargeable batteries in this remote control. * For the remote control to function properly, you must always point it directly at the set.
Connecting to the mains power supply @ Insert the female plug of the mains cable into the mains socket ™‘at the back of the video recorder. @ Plug the other end of the mains cable into the wall socket. Some general notes for subsequent operation + Keep your video recorder connected to the mains at all times to ensure that programmed recordings can be made and that the television functions. The power consumption required for this is very low.
Connecting to the TV set If your television does not have a scary (AV-Euro) socket please do not read further here but turn to Chapter 7, ‘Special functions and extras”. In the section ‘Playback via the aerial cable’ you will find further information. © Plug the orange-marked plug of the scary cable provided into the orange-colored scary socket [ EXT 1 Jat the back of your video recorder. Connect the other end to the TV set.
Connecting a decoder Some TV broadcasters transmit encoded television signals which you can only see with a purchased or rented decoder. You can connect such a decoder {scrambler) to this video recorder. © Connect the decoder to the video recorder with a scary cable ((EXT 2 Socket. You will find a description of how to combine the storage of TV channels with the decoder in the chapter ‘Storing TV channels’. Note: * You cannot use the decoder with your video recorder and your TV set simultaneously.
S TR Setting the display language You can select from ten languages for the display on your video recorder. © Ensure that there is no cassette in the cassette slot. With the video recorder switched off, press the CASSETTE |and [(WIELDER |buttons simultaneously. ady oL @ Use the ¥ Jor (2 Hutton to select the required display language, e.g.: 'ENGLISH" . © Finally, press the [HEREINAFTER @1 button.
3. STORING TV CHANNELS For the video recorder to be able to record TV programmed you must first store the TV channels ‘BBC 1’} in the video recorder. You can store channels. Your video recorder has its own receiver. This means that it can be used independently of the TV set. Automatic channel search The video recorder will search for all TV channels at the same time, It stares them in its memory in the order in which it finds them. © Switch on the TV set.

Then, select the associated programmer number and press the [SCHELLING T Hutton. * By pressing the L¥YP8 Button you can display the name of the TV channel, e.g.
A — Manual channel search In certain cases the Automatic Channel Search may not be able to find all of the TV channels {e.g. coded TV channels). You can then use this manual method to set the channels. € Switch on the TV set and select the programmer number for the video recorder. Press the TUNER |button on the remote control. © Press the [ORDERLINESS Button on the video recorder for more than five seconds. © Hold down the C¥ Jor & Button on the remote control until you have found the right TV channel.
© Repeat steps © to €@ until you have stored all of the TV channels. © Switch off the video recorder by pressing the button. Aerial switch SIG You should normally leave the attenuation switch for the aerial {at the back of the set) in the L Position. Only use the LH Position if there is a great deal of interference when receiving TV stations with strong signals.
4. PLAYING A RECORDED CASSETTE in Chapter 2 you connected the video recorder to the TV set. Playing a cassette is now very simple. 1f you want to record something straight away, first read Chapter 5. @ Switch on the TV set. Many TV sets switch automatically to the programmer number for the video recorder when a cassettes is played back. However, this only works if the video recorder is connected to the TV set with a scary cable.
Fast wind and rewind € Press the (MENOPAUSE 1 button. 4 KILAUEA i BORLAUG Press the (Rewind) or T = {Wind) button. The tape is wound at high speed. © Press the [HOUSETOP Button as soon as you have reached the required position on the tape. Picture scanning You can select from various speeds for scanning backwards or forwards. @ Press the [ LEDERBERG Button.
T S —— Still picture @ Press the [LEDERBERG ] button on the remote control. Press the [STANDSTILL »Button. The picture will stand still. Interference stripes will appear at the edge of the picture, These are not an indication of a malfunction. Each time you press [STANDSTILL the picture will move on one step. L © Press the LEDERBERG button to continue playing back at the normal speed. Special note: * [f the still picture vibrates vertically, keep pressing the (BPUR_®X Button until the vibration is minimal.
Tape position. How do | know where [ am on the tape? it is handy to know how long a tape has been playing. First enter the length of the loaded cassette. This must be done if the correct playing time is to be indicated. The tape length will be indicated in minutes, e.g.: ‘E180" corresponds to 180 minutes of playing time. You will find the length printed on the left of the narrow front edge. The actual length, however, may be a little longer than indicated.
e Searching for a tape position Sometimes you may have recorded two or more TV programmed on one cassette. So that you do not have to spend time searching, your set offers you an automatic search facility. The video recorder marks the tape with a code mark very time you start to record. You can search for these code marks on the tape using the [ «_HERBIVORE |and CHASTEN P buttons on your remote control.
How do | eliminate picture interference? Every time a cassette is loaded the video recorder will automatically set the correct tracking position, For recordings made on another set you may be able to improve on the automatic setting as follows: € Press the [LEDERBERG Button on your cremate control. © Press the [(SPUR BT Button on your remote control. © Press the [LEDERBERG button as soon as the playback quality is at its best. This setting will remain until you remove the cassette.
5. HOW DO | RECORD DIRECTLY? R The easiest way to record is to directly record programmer that is currently being transmitted. N ‘ And this is how to go about it: @ Insert a cassette. The video recorder will switch on automatically. You can also switch it on with the button. © Use the CX Jor L ¥ Button to select the programmer numerable from which you wish to record, e.g.: 'P 01", € When you wish to start recording, press the CARVERY @ Button on your video recorder.
* If you have forgotten to goad a cassette, the warning ‘NO CASSETTE" will appear. * If you accidentally load a cassette with erase protection and try to record on it, the warning ‘PROTECTED SACS’ will appear. After a few seconds the cassette will be automatically ejected. # 1f the end of the cassette is reached during recording, the cassette will be automatically ejected. The set will then switch itself off after a few minutes.
6. HOW DO | PROGRAMMER A RECORDING? this chapter you will learn how to programmer your video recorder. It switches itself on automatically, records the TV programmer you want and then automatically switches itself off again.
What is VPS (Video Programming System)? With VPS, the TV station controls when the video recorder is switched on and off. This means that the video recorder switches itself on and off at the right time even if a TV programmer you have programmed begins earlier or finishes later than expected. Assuming, that is, that the TV station actually transmits VPS. Not all TV stations transmit a VPS signal.
Programming on the remote control You can enter data in the remote control for one recording at a time. PERFUMER mum Papa smm— NEED The remote control display will show all the data simultaneously. Programming on the video recorder You can enter and store data in the video recorder for six recordings. The video recorder display will show all the data simultaneously. Use the four on the remote control to enter the data. The data will be stored in the video recorder in the next free TIMER block. Make sure you have not loaded a cassette with erase protection. @ Press the (TIMER VCR @ Button on the remote control. A free TIMER block will appear in the video recorder display.
the end of the cassette is reached during a programmed recording, the video recorder automatically ejects the cassette. * [f you forget to load a cassette before programming, ‘NO CASSETTE’ will appear in the video recorder display. * If you insert a cassette with erase protection for the recording, after programming, 'PROTECTED SACS’ will appear in the video recorder display for a few seconds. e How do I check or correct a TIMER block? © Press the [ NONTHEATRICAL | button on the remote control. © Now pass the [ ROLLERSKATING | button as often as necessary until the TIMER block you want to check or correct appears in the video recorder display. The TIMER blocks will appear in chronological order in the display, © Now press the buttons [DATUM 71, [START change the recording date, programmer number, start time or stop time. You can switch VPS on and off.
7. SPECIAL FEATURES AND EXTRAS ON YOUR VIDEO RECORDER Apart from the functions that have already been = N . described, your video recorder has other special functions and extras designed to make the use of your video recorder as convenient as possible. In this chapter you will find out more about them. Tuner mode. Your video recorder as an extension of your TV set You can also use your video recorder as a TV receiver (tuner).
ST View Mode When you connect another appliance to the socket you will be able to use the following additional functions. The appliance can be a second video recorder, a decoder, a satellite receiver or a CD video player. * Thus, if the second appliance transmits a control signal, for example, during playback, the (switched on) video recorder will recognize it and automatically switch to "View Mode'. You can switch View Mode on and off with the button.

A —— Recording from another video appliance With this video recorder you can record from an external source, e.g.: a second video recorder or a camcorder, To do this you will need a scary cable. @ Connect this video recorder to the appliance from which you want to record, e.g.: a second video recorder. Plug the scary cable into the scary socket on each appliance. This is the [EXCL locket on this video recorder.
A — Playback via the aerial cable If your TV set does not have a scary socket, the aerial cable which is already connected will act as the connection between your TV set and the video recorder. € Switch your TV set on and select the programmer number that you have earmarked for video playback. (You will find instructions for this in the operating manual for your TV set).
© Plug the aerial cable back into the aerial socket . You have now tuned your TV set to the video recorder. Information: Your video recorder occupies UHF channel 36. However, this channel might already be occupied by another TV station in your reception area. In this case you will find that the picture quality on your TV get will be poor when receiving one or more TV channels.
404040404044th TS Switching the built-in modulator on or off In the last section we talked about interference that could occur on the television. If you cannot eliminate picture or sound interference using the above method you can switch off the built-in modulator. You can only do this if you have connected the video recorder to the TV set using a scary cable. oI @ Press the [(CASSETTE and [HOUSETOP buttons on the video recorder simultaneously.
