BASIC CABLE TV SIGNAL CONNECTION CABLE TV Y our Cable TV input into your home may be a single (75 ohm) cable, or a Converter Box installation. In either case the connection to the TV is very easy. Just put the threaded end of the cable signal to the TV's antenna plug and screw it down finger tight. Remember: Set the TV for the type signal you've just connected. Refer to the Cable Control on page 11 to set the TV for cable tuning.
BASIC ANTENNA SIGNAL CONNECTIONS ANTENNA SMART HELP A combination antenna receives normal broadcast channels (VHF 2-13 and UHF 14-69). Your connection is easy since there is only one 75Ω (ohm) antenna plug on the back of your TV - and that’s where the antenna goes. Note: For homes with separate UHF and VHF antennas you will need an optional combiner to connect to the TV. U/V Combiner BEGIN If your antenna has a round cable (75 ohm) on the end, then you're ready to connect it to the TV.
BASIC TV TO VCR (& FRONT A/V INPUT) CONNECTIONS TV TO VCR FRONT AUDIO/VIDEO INPUTS T he basic Antenna, or Cable TV, to VCR to TV connection is shown below. For more information on other hookups (possible when Cable Converter/Descrambler boxes are included) refer to your accessory Device and Cable Converter Owner's Manual for details. This television is equipped with Mono Audio and Video input jacks located in the front of the TV’s cabinet just left of the Channel and Volume buttons.
BASIC TV/REMOTE OPERATIONS TELEVISION SMART HELP BEGIN Remember, The tuned channel number will always briefly appear when the TV is first turned ON (and with channel changes.) Press the POWER button to turn the TV ON. Press the VOLUME + button to increase the sound level, or the VOLUME – button to lower the sound level. Pressing both buttons at the same time will display the onscreen menu. Once in the menu, use these button to make adjustments or selections.
TV REMOTE BUTTONS Power Button Press to turn the TV ON and OFF. POWER Sleep Button Press to set the TV to automatically turn itself OFF. CC Button Press to select Closed Caption options within the menu. USING THE MENU LANGUAGE CONTROL F or our Spanish speaking TV owners an onscreen LANGUAGE option is present. With the LANGUAGE control you can set the TV’s onscreen menu to be shown in either English or Spanish. BEGIN Press the MENU button on the remote to show the onscreen menu. PICTURE SMARTLOCK SETUP CC Press the CURSOR UP ▲ or DOWN ▼ buttons to scroll through the onscreen menu until the word SETUP is highlighted.
SETTING THE CABLE (TUNING) CONTROL T he CABLE feature allows you to change the TV’s signal input by turning the “Cable Mode” ON or OFF. It’s important for the TV to know what type of signal, either a Cable TV signal or a normal Antenna signal, is to be used. BEGIN Press the MENU button on the remote to show the onscreen menu. PICTURE SMARTLOCK SETUP CC Press the CURSOR UP ▲ or DOWN ▼ buttons to scroll through the onscreen menu until the word SETUP is highlighted.
USING THE AUTO PROGRAM CONTROL Y our TV can automatically set itself for local area (or Cable TV) channels. This makes it easy for you to select only the TV stations in your area when the CHANNEL (+), (–) buttons are pressed. PICTURE SMARTLOCK SETUP CC Note: Make sure the Antenna or Cable TV signal connection has been completed before AUTO PROGRAM is started. HOW TO USE THE CHANNEL EDIT CONTROL C hannel Edit makes it easy for you to SAVE or DELETE channels from the list of channels stored in the TV’s memory. BEGIN Using the Numbered Buttons, enter the channel you wish to save or delete from the TV’s memory. 12 Press the MENU button on the remote to show the onscreen menu. Press the CURSOR UP ▲ or DOWN ▼ button to scroll through the onscreen menu until the word SETUP is highlighted.
ADJUSTING THE TV PICTURE T o adjust your TV picture controls, select a channel and follow the steps shown below: BEGIN Press the MENU button on the remote to display the onscreen menu. PICTURE SMARTLOCK SETUP CC With PICTURE highlighted, press the CURSOR RIGHT © button to display the PICTURE adjustment options. Press the CURSOR UP ▲ or DOWN ▼ buttons until the word BRIGHTNESS is highlighted (or, COLOR, PICTURE, SHARPNESS, TINT, CONTRAST PLUS depending on the adjustment you want to make).
SETTING THE CLOCK FEATURE Y our television comes with an onscreen clock. During normal operation the clock appears on the screen when the STATUS/EXIT button is pressed or when channel changes occur. BEGIN Press the CLOCK button on the remote to display the onscreen CLOCK menu. SET CLOCK will be highlighted Enter the current time using the NUMBERED buttons. If the first number is a single digit first enter a zero then the digit (i.e., press “0”, then press “8”).
SETTING THE ON TIMER (ACTIVE) CONTROL J ust like an alarm clock you can set the TV to turn itself ON at the same time everyday. BEGIN Press the CLOCK button to display the Clock onscreen menu. Press the CURSOR CURSOR DOWN ▼ button until the words TIMER ACTIVE are highlighted. Press the CURSOR RIGHT SET CLOCK TIMER ACTIVE CHANNEL START TIME OFF © or CURSOR LEFT § button SET CLOCK TIMER ACTIVE CHANNEL START TIME to select ON (if activating) or OFF (if deactivating) the Timer control.
SELECTING A START UP CHANNEL U sed along with the Clock features, you can select a specific channel that the television will tune to when the Timer Active control is turned ON. BEGIN Press the CLOCK button to display the Clock onscreen menu. Press the CURSOR CURSOR DOWN ▼ button until the word CHANNEL is highlighted. SETTING THE TV FOR CLOSED CAPTIONING C losed Captioning (CC) allows you to read the voice content of television programs on the TV screen. Designed to help the hearing impaired, this feature uses onscreen “text boxes” to show dialogue and conversations while the TV program is in progress. NOTE: Not all TV programs and product commercials are made for broadcast with Closed Caption (CC) information included.
USING THE SLEEP TIMER CONTROL H ave you ever fallen asleep in front of the TV only to have it wake you up at two in the morning with a test pattern screeching in your ears? Well, your TV can save you all that trouble by automatically turning itself off. O MIN BEGIN Press the SLEEP button on the remote control and the SLEEP timer display will appear on the screen.
USING THE TV VOLUME BAR CONTROL U se the Volume Bar control to see the TV’s volume level settings on the TV screen. The Volume Bar will be seen each time the VOLUME buttons (on the TV or remote) are pressed. BEGIN Press the VOL + button on the remote to display the onscreen Volume Bar. The VOL + button will increase the sound level coming from the television. VOLUME Press the VOL – button on the remote to display the onscreen Volume Bar.
UNDERSTANDING THE SMARTLOCK™ FEATURE T he SmartLock feature is an integrated circuit that receives and processes data sent by broadcasters, or other program providers, that contain program content advisories. When programmed by the viewer, a TV with SmartLock can respond to the content advisories and block program content that may be found objectionable (such as offensive language, violence, sexual situations, etc.). This is a great feature to censor the type of viewing children may watch.
SETTING THE SMARTLOCK™ ACCESS CODE O ver the next few pages you’ll learn how to block programs and get a better understanding of the rating terms for certain broadcasts. SETTING THE SMARTLOCK™ BLOCKING OPTIONS A fter your personal access code has been set (see previous page), SmartLock offers the viewer special blocking options. BLOCK PROGRAMMING USING MOVIE RATINGS SMART HELP T here are two types of program ratings within the SmartLock feature. One is based on the Movie Industry ratings while the other is based on the TV Industry ratings. Both can be used to block or censor programming that has been rated in either manner.
BLOCK PROGRAMMING USING TV RATINGS SMART HELP T his portion of the SmartLock features cover program ratings based on the TV Industry rating system. This is know as TV RATINGS within SmartLock. USING THE SMARTLOCK™ REVIEW SCREEN N ow that you’ve learn how to block or censor your viewing using the Movie Ratings or TV Ratings let’s review what you’ve done. The SmartLock Review feature allows you to see what has been blocked. Whenever the SmartLock Feature is accessed within the onscreen menu a review screen will be displayed showing what ratings or blocking options have been turned on.
USING THE SMARTPICTURE™ CONTROL W hether you’re watching a movie or a video game, your TV has automatic video control settings matched for your current program source or content. The SmartPicture feature quickly resets your TV’s video controls for a number of different types of programs and viewing conditions you may have in your home. Each SmartPicture setting is preset at the factory to automatically adjust the TV’s Brightness, Color, Picture, Sharpness, Tint, and Contrast Plus settings.
USING THE SMARTSOUND™ CONTROL I n many cases the volume levels coming from broadcast programming or commercials are never the same. With the SmartSound control turned ON, you can have the TV level out the sound being heard. This makes for a more consistent sound by reducing the peaks and valleys that occur during program changes or commercial breaks. BEGIN Press the SMART SOUND button on the remote control. The current SmartSound setting will appear in the middle of the screen (ON or OFF).
USING THE TV’S SMARTSURF™ (A/CH BUTTON) CONTROL A “list” or series of previously viewed channels can be selected with the SURF button on your remote control. With this feature you can easily switch between different TV programs that currently interest you. The SmartSurf control allows you set up to five channels in its quick viewing“list”. 12 SURF 12 BEGIN Press the CHANNEL (+) or (–) buttons (or the NUMBER buttons) to select a channel to add to the SURF list.

These tips can save you time and money since charges for TV installation and adjustment of customer controls are not covered under this television’s warranty.
TROUBLESHOOTING TV Will Not Display Any Channel Above 13 ... Try repeating the channel selection again. Check the Cable Control feature. Be sure to set the control to ON if cable broadcasting is present. Activate the Auto Program Control to add all available channels to the television’s memory. Try “Saving” the channel(s) manually in the television’s memory using the Channel Edit Control. Can’t remember my Access Code for SMARTLOCK ...
