Playable Discs 7 Playable Discs This Player will play Digital Video Discs (DVDs), Video Compact Discs (VCDs), Super Video CDs, Audio CDs, and the Audio CD layer of Super Audio CDs. This Player also plays MP3 files recorded onto a Compact Disc Recordable (CD-R) or a Compact Disc Rewritable (CD-RW). Discs having the following logos should play on this Player. DVDs must also meet the Region Code and Color System requirements described below.

Hookups (cont’d) 15 Putting Batteries in the Remote Control 1 2 Remove the battery compartment lid on the back of the remote control by pressing in the tab, then lifting off the lid. 3 Replace the battery compartment lid as shown at right. Place two AA batteries inside the battery compartment with their + and – ends aligned as indicated. Do not mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries (standard, alkaline, etc.).
Quick Disc Playback 1 2 There are many playback features and options available on Discs. After familiarizing yourself with the Player and its remote control as described on pages 17-19, see pages 20 and following to try additional playback features. 1 Press POWER y to turn on the Player. Turn on your TV. Set it to the correct Video In channel. You should see the blue background screen on the TV (if no Disc is in the Player).
Remote Control Buttons 17 VIDEO SYS (system) Button Press repeatedly when playback is stopped to set the Player’s Color System to NTSC, PAL, or MULTI. Details are on page 33. PBC ON/OFF Button Press to turn Playback Control on or off when playing a Video CD. Details are on page 30. Number Buttons Use to select numbered items in a Disc menu. Details are on page 20. Press to select a Track for playback. Use the +10 button to enter Tracks above nine. For example, to select Track 18, press +10, then 8.
Front Panel POWER y Button Press to turn the Player on or off. PLAY/PAUSE M Button Press to start playing a Disc. Press once during playback to pause play; press again to resume play. EJECT c Button Press to remove a Disc from the Player. Disc Slot Insert a Disc here. Insert about one-third of the Disc, then the Player will accept the Disc automatically. Do not press the Disc or force the Disc into the Player.

Title/Disc Menus, Chapter/Track Selection DVD Title/Disc Menus 1 Press DISC MENU to access the main DVD Disc menu. (ROOT MENU may appear in the top left corner of the TV screen briefly.) The menu may list camera angles, spoken language and subtitle options, Chapters for the Title, or other Disc features. Or, press TITLE if the current Title of the current DVD has a Title menu. The Title menu will appear on the screen. 2 Press 9 8 ; : to select items in the menu, then press OK.
Forward and Reverse Searching, Slow Motion 21 DVD AUDIO CD VIDEO CD Forward and Reverse Searching 1 Press FWD D to fast forward during playback. Press FWD D repeatedly to choose FF 1, FF 2, FF 3, or FF 4. FF 1 plays the Disc one time as fast; FF 2 plays the Disc twice as fast; FF 3 plays the Disc three times as fast; and FF 4 plays the Disc four times as fast. Or, press REV h for a reverse search during playback. Press REV h repeatedly to choose FR 1, FR 2, FR 3, or FR 4.
Still Picture, Time Search DVD VIDEO CD Still Picture 1 2 During playback, press PLAY/PAUSE M on the remote control once. A still picture will appear on the TV screen. PAUSE will appear in the top left corner of the TV screen. To resume normal playback, press PLAY/PAUSE M again. 1,2 DVD VIDEO CD Time Search 2 AUDIO CD Time Search lets you choose a specific elapsed playing time at which you want to resume Disc playback. 1 Press SEARCH twice during DVD playback.
Zoom, Camera Angle 23 DVD VIDEO CD Zoom Zooming lets you enlarge the video image during playback. 1 Press ZOOM a repeatedly during playback to select ZOOM X1.5, ZOOM X2, or ZOOM X4. Play will continue as usual, but the picture will be one-and-a-half (ZOOM X1.5), twice (ZOOM X2), or four times (ZOOM X4) as large as usual. 2 To return the picture to its normal size, press ZOOM a again so ZOOM OFF appears briefly in the top left corner of the TV screen.
Repeat, Repeat A-B DVD AUDIO CD VIDEO CD Repeat You may play a Chapter, Track, Title, or Disc repeatedly. 1 2 During playback, press REPEAT repeatedly to choose a Repeat mode. ● To repeat the current Chapter/Track, press REPEAT so CHAPTER REPEAT ON (DVD Chapter) or REP-ONE (Audio CD or Video CD Track) appears in the top left corner of the TV screen. ● To repeat the current Title (DVD only), press REPEAT again so TITLE REPEAT ON appears in the top left corner of the TV screen.
Audio Language, Subtitle Language 25 DVD Audio Language Some DVDs are recorded in different languages. You may be able to watch the same movie in French, Spanish, etc. The movie may have special audio features, such as a director’s commentary or music soundtrack. If these are available on the DVD, access the different languages or featured soundtracks by following these steps. 1 During DVD playback, press AUDIO Y repeatedly.
Disc Menu Language Most DVDs have a Disc menu that appears when you insert the DVD in the Player or when you press DISC MENU on the Player’s remote to access the Disc menu. The Player also refers to this as the ROOT MENU of the DVD. If the DVD maker recorded the Disc menu in different languages, you may be able to see the menu in the other languages by adjusting DISC MENU in the Player’s PREFERENCES menu as described below. 1 2 3 4 5 Press STOP/RETURN L twice to stop playback completely.
Favorite Track Selection 27 VIDEO CD AUDIO CD Favorite Track Selection (FTS) lets you play Tracks in an order you set up. The order in which you set the Tracks is called a Program. 1 While playback is stopped, press PROGRAM FTS. 2 Press the Number buttons to enter the number of the Track you want to play first. The Track number will appear to the right of the Program position in which you stored the Track. To enter Track numbers above nine, use the +10 button.
Parental Control Password 5 DVD VIDEO CD Parental Control limits viewing of Discs that exceed the limits you set. This feature will not limit viewing if the Disc manufacturer did not code the Disc. Philips cannot guarantee the availability of Parental Control with all Discs, and therefore denies any liability associated with unintended watching of Discs. Make sure your Discs play according to your Parental Control settings before you allow children access to the Player or Discs.
Parental Control Levels 29 Some DVD and Video CD makers code the DVD/Video CD so it will only play according to the level you set at the Player. The Parental Control level may apply to the complete Disc or to certain scenes on the Disc. Follow the steps below to set the Parental Level at which you want Discs to play. 1 2 3 4 5 Press STOP/RETURN L twice to stop playback completely. Press SYSTEM MENU. 3-6 Press 9 to select PREFERENCES, then press OK.
Preview, Playback Control VIDEO CD Preview Some Video CDs or Super Video CDs may contain preview or introductory information. Preview will be useful when you want to go directly to a Track but cannot remember the Track number of the segment you are seeking. 1 2 While playback is stopped, press PREVIEW. A small picture representing the beginning of each Track will appear on the TV screen. A maximum of nine Track pictures can appear on the screen at once.
MP3 Playback 31 MP3 is a compression method that makes digital music files up to 10 times smaller without losing significant sound quality. MP3 is common on the Internet, letting you transfer Tracks to your computer and onto a CD Recordable or CD Rewritable disc. Materials and equipment with which to make MP3 recordings are not supplied with this Player. MP3 Tracks are recorded at a certain bit rate or speed.
JPEG Playback Some CD-Rs may contain pictures in a JPEG format. For example, you may have photographic film developed by a retailer that places the pictures on a CD-R for you. These pictures may be in JPEG format. You cannot make or record such CD-Rs using this Player. See your computer manual for details on making CD-R recordings. If you are playing a CD-R on this Player and the CD-R contains JPEG files, you may want to use some of the JPEG features described below.
TV Type (NTSC/PAL) 33 TV Type (NTSC/PAL) DVDs are recorded according to a Color System, the most common of which are NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the most common in the United States. Your TV also operates according to a Color System. This Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL. However, in order for a DVD to play on this Player, the Color System of the DVD, the TV, and the Player should match.
TV Display You may set the Player to display video in one of three formats: Letterbox, Pan & Scan, or Wide. The TV Display you select must be available on the DVD. If not, the TV Display setting will not affect the picture. 1 2 3 4 Press SYSTEM MENU. GENERAL SETUP will be selected. Press OK. 1,5 TV DISPLAY will be selected. Press :. Picture Mode, Video Out 35 Picture Mode Improve the clarity and stillness of the Player’s picture by adjusting Picture Mode (PIC MODE). 1 2 3 4 Press SYSTEM MENU. GENERAL SETUP will be selected. Press OK. 1,5 Press 9 to select PIC MODE, then press -. Press 8 or 9 to choose AUTO, HI-RES, or N-FLICKER, then press OK. Choose Auto to have images appear according to their standard settings. Choose Hi-Res (High Resolution) to sharpen the images to a high quality.
Audio Out, LPCM Output Audio Out Adjust the AUDIO OUT setting according to how you connected the Player to your TV or Stereo. 1 2 3 4 Press SYSTEM MENU. Press 9 to select AUDIO SETUP, then press OK. 1,5 AUDIO OUT will be selected. Press -. Press 8 or 9 to select ANALOG, SPDIF (RAW), or SPDIF (PCM), then press OK. ● Choose ANALOG if you used the Player’s FL (front left, white) and FR (front right, red) jacks to connect to the TV, Stereo, or Receiver.
Dual Mono, Dynamic Range Compression 37 Dual Mono Adjust DUAL MONO to choose whether you want to hear sound from the Disc’s left or right audio channel or both. 1 2 3 4 Press SYSTEM MENU. Speaker Channel Setup CHANNEL SETUP lets you select a surround sound effect or adjust the speakers you connected to the Player. If you connected the Player to a TV only or to a Stereo that is not Dolby Digital or DTS compatible, adjust the DOWNMIX setting to achieve a surround sound effect without having six speakers connected to the Player. If you connected the Player to a Multichannel Receiver (six-channel) as described on page 14, adjust the individual speakers. 1 2 3 4 1,5 Press SYSTEM MENU.
Angle Mark 39 When a DVD has scenes recorded from different angles, the Angle Mark will appear on the TV screen during a multi-angle scene. On-Screen Display Language The Player’s System Menu is the menu you access when you press SYSTEM MENU on the remote control. This is the menu in which you set up many of the Player’s features. Screen Saver, Defaults 41 Screen Saver The Screen Saver is the moving DVD logo that appears on your TV screen when Disc playback is stopped or you have not used the Player or its remote. Glossary Analog: Sound that has not been turned into numbers. Analog sound varies, while digital sound has specific numerical values. Analog sound is available when you use the red and white, left and right audio jacks on your equipment. These jacks send audio through two channels, the left and right. Bit Rate: The amount of data used to hold a given length of music; measured in kilobits per seconds, or kbps. Or, the speed at which you record.
