Heater and Air Conditioner
Maintenance
Important information to know about
maintaining the air conditioner for a Low
Cab Forward vehicle.
The combination heater-air conditioner
provides comfort for those in the cab
through accurate control of the cab
environment in all weather conditions.
Regular attention to the items below will
help you keep the heater-air conditioner
unit running well. Keep the vehicle's
ventilation system, engine exhaust system
and cab joints properly maintained. It is
recommended that the vehicle's exhaust
system and cab be serviced as follows:
Inspected by a competent
technician every 15,000 miles
Whenever a change is noticed in
the sound of the exhaust system
Whenever the exhaust system,
underbody or cab is damaged
To allow for proper operation of the vehicle
ventilation system, proceed as follows:
Keep the inlet grille at the base of
the windshield clear of snow, ice,
leaves and other obstructions at all
times.
Keep the exhaust pipe area clear to
help reduce the buildup of exhaust
gas under the vehicle.
Check the drain tube of the fresh air
inlet for trapped water before
assuming that there is a leak in the
heating system.
Special Precautions
WARNING!
Excessive heat may cause the pressurized
components of the air conditioning system
to explode. Never weld, solder, steam clean,
or use a blow torch near any part of the air
conditioning system. Failure to comply may
result in death, personal injury, equipment or
property damage.
WARNING!
Air conditioning refrigerant can be hazard-
ous to your health. Do not expose yourself
to leaking refrigerant for prolonged periods
near excessive heat, open flames, or with-
out proper ventilation. Failure to do so may
result in death or personal injury.
If a refrigerant leak develops in the
presence of excessive heat or an open
flame, hazardous gases may be
generated. If you become aware of a
refrigerant leak on your vehicle have your
system serviced immediately and observe
the following precautions: Stay away from
the hot engine until the exhaust manifold
has cooled. Do not permit any open flame
in the area. Even a match or a cigarette
lighter may generate a hazardous quantity
of poisonous gas. Do not smoke in the
area. Inhaling gaseous refrigerant through
a cigarette may cause violent illness.
