FRONTAXLEANDSUSPENSION
U-BoltTorque
ItisimportantthatU-boltsremaintight.
Severeuseofyourvehiclewillcause
themtoloosenfaster.Butallvehicles
needtohavetheirU-boltscheckedand
tightenedregularly.Besuresomeone
withthepropertrainingandtheright
toolschecksandtightenstheU-bolts
onyourvehicle.
Newspringscansettleinafterservice,
relievingthetensionontheU-bolts.
LooseU-boltscancauseleafspring
breakage,axlemisalignment,hard
steeringandabnormaltirewear.
Allvehiclesshouldhavesuspension
U-boltstightenedaftertherst500
miles(800km)ofoperation.Re-torque
thefrontspringpinchboltsandshackle
pinchbolts.
WARNING!
Donotoperatethevehicleifthe
U-boltsarenotproperlytightened.
LooseU-boltswillcausetheaxle
tonotbeproperlysecuredtothe
suspension,whichcouldcauseloss
ofvehiclecontrolandanaccident.
LooseU-boltscanalsocauseun-
eventirewearandpooralignment.
Failuretocomplymayresultin
death,personalinjury,equipmentor
propertydamage.
U-boltsaredifculttotightenunless
youhavetherightequipment.Ifyou
cannottightenthemcorrectlyyourself,
besuretohavethemcheckedand
tightenedregularlybyanauthorized
mechanic.
TightenU-boltnutstothespecied
torquevaluewiththevehicleloadedto
itsnormalgrossweight.Thefollowing
torquevaluesapplytoU-boltsand
nutswithcleanthreadslubricatedwith
Chevronzinclubricant(SAE20or30
oilsacceptablebutnotpreferred).
WARNING!
DonotreplaceU-boltsandnutswith
commonU-boltsorstandardnuts.
Thesepartsarecriticaltovehicle
safety.IfthewrongU-boltsornuts
areused,theaxlecouldloosenor
separatefromthevehicleandcause
aseriousaccident.UseonlyU-bolts
andnutsofSAEGrade8speci-
cationorbetter.Failuretocomply
mayresultindeath,personalinjury,
equipmentorpropertydamage.
