OPERATINGTHEBRAKESYSTEM
Retarders
Variousretardersareavailablewhich
functionagainsttheengine,driveline,
ortransmission.Thesearedevices
thatuseyourengine’spowertoslow
downyourvehicle.Theysavewear
andtearonyourservicebrakesand
canbeasafetyfeature,too,because
theycankeepyourbrakesfrom
overheating.
Ideally,youshouldalwaysslowyour
vehiclewithyourretarder(where
permittedbylaw)anduseyourservice
brakesonlyforstoppingcompletely.
Operatingthiswaywillgreatlyprolong
thelifeofyourbrakes.
WARNING!
Donotuseanyofthevehicle’sre-
tardersinanysituationthatrequires
animmediatestopand/orinsitua-
tionsofpoortraction(suchaswet,
icyorsnowcoveredroads).Trying
tousetheretarderinsteadoftheser-
vicebrakesmaycausealossofve-
hiclecontrolwhichmayresultinan
accidentinvolvingdeathorpersonal
injury.
WARNING!
Theservicebrakesmustbeusedin
anemergency.Theretarderalone
mightnotstopyoufastenoughto
preventanaccident.Failuretocom-
plymayresultindeath,personalin-
jury,equipmentorpropertydamage.
TheretarderisNOTintendedasthe
primarybrakeforthevehicle,noris
itanemergencybrake.Theretarder
onlyhelpstheservicebrakesbyusing
pressuretoslowthedrivetrain.Use
theservicebrakesforquickstops.
Donotusetheretarderwhenoperating
onroadsurfaceswithpoortraction
(suchaswet,icy,orsnowcovered
roadsorgravel).Retarderscan
causethewheelstoskidonaslippery
surface.
