VisualInspection
Forallvehicles,mandatory
maintenanceproceduresinclude
retighteningofU-boltsandcomplete
inspection.However,evenwithproper
maintenance,manyfactorsaffectthe
servicelifeofspringsandsuspension
components,suchas:fatigue,vehicle
grossweight,typeofload,road
conditions,andvehiclespeed.
ItisimportantthatU-boltsremaintight.
Severeuseofyourvehiclecancause
themtoloosenfaster.Butallvehicles
needtohavetheirU-boltscheckedand
tightenedregularly.Besuresomeone
withthepropertrainingandtheright
toolschecksandtightenstheU-bolts
onyourvehicle.
Aftertherst500miles(800km)of
operation,inspectthesuspension
periodically,asnotedbelow:
Visuallycheckforlooseormissing
fasteners,cracksinhanger,or
axleconnectionbrackets.
Checkthatspringsarecenteredin
hangersandingoodcondition.
Checkforcracks,wearmarks,
splits,orotherdefectsonthe
surfaceofthespring.
Replacedefectiveparts.Because
repairedspringscannotbe
fullyrestoredtotheiroriginal
servicelife,replacethecomplete
assemblyifcracksorotherdefects
aredetected.
Afterreplacementofanypartor
discoveryofloosecomponents,
checkthetorqueofallfasteners.
Newspringssettle-inafterthe
vehicle'sinitialservice,causing
theU-boltstobecomeloose.
RearSuspensionFasteners
Tomaintaintheperformanceofthe
airsuspension,checkfastenertorque
valuesaftertherst2,000miles(3,218
km)ofserviceandevery60,000miles
(96,000km)thereafter.
Torquerecommendationsapplyto
fastenerssuppliedandinstalledby
vehiclemanufacture.Thevalueslisted
inthetablesbelow,areforcadmium
platedorphosphateandoilfasteners
only.
U-boltsaredifculttotightenunless
youhavetherightequipment.Ifyou
cannottightenthemcorrectlyyourself,
besuretohavethemcheckedand
tightenedregularlybyanauthorized
mechanic.
