BeforeStoppingtheEngine
Ahotenginestoresagreatamountof
heat.Itdoesn’tcooldownimmediately
afteryoushutitoff.Alwayscoolyour
enginedownbeforeshuttingitoff.You
willgreatlyincreaseitsservicelife.
Idletheengineat1000RPMfor
veminutes.Thenlowidleforthirty
secondsbeforeshutdown.Thiswill
allowcirculatingcoolantandlubricating
oiltocarryawayheatfromthecylinder
head,valves,pistons,cylinderliners,
turbocharger,andbearings.This
wayyoucanpreventseriousengine
damagethatmayresultfromuneven
cooling.
Turbochargers
Thiscooling-downpracticeis
especiallyimportantonaturbocharged
engine.Theturbochargercontains
bearingsandsealsthataresubjected
tohotexhaustgases.Whilethe
engineisoperating,heatiscarried
awaybycirculatingoil.Ifyoustopthe
enginesuddenly,thetemperatureof
theturbochargercouldriseasmuchas
100°F(55°C)abovethetemperature
reachedduringoperation.Asudden
riseintemperaturelikethiscould
causethebearingstoseizeortheoil
sealstoloosen.
Refueling
Airinsidethefueltanksallowswater
tocondenseinthetank.T oprevent
thiscondensationwhilethevehicleis
parkedforextendedperiodsoftime,
llthetanksto95percentofcapacity.
Neverlltomorethan95percent
capacityasthisprovidesroomfor
expansionresultingfromtemperature
extremes.Whenrefueling,add
approximatelythesameamountto
eachfueltankonvehicleswithmore
thanonetank.

ersinyourvehicle.Fuelcontainers,
eitherfullorempty,mayleak,ex-
plode,andcauseorfeedare.Do
notcarryextrafuelcontainers,even
emptyonesaredangerous.Failure
tocomplymayresultindeath,per-
sonalinjury,equipmentorproperty
damage.
