UseofTachometer
Thetachometerisaninstrumentthat
aidsinobtainingthebestperformance
oftheengineandmanualtransmission,
servingasaguideforshiftinggears.
RefertotheEngineOperationand
MaintenanceManualforoptimum
enginerpm.
•Iftheenginerpmmovesbeyond
themaximumgovernedspeed,
indicatinganoverspeedcondition,
applytheservicebrakeorshiftto
ahighergeartobringenginerpm
withintheoptimumspeedrange.
•Whendrivingdownhill:shifttoa
lowergear,usetheenginebrake
(ifsoequipped),andusethe
servicebrake,keepingtheengine
speedbelow2,100rpm.
Whentheenginespeedreaches
itsmaximumgovernedspeed,the
injectionpumpgovernorcutsofffuel
totheengine.However,thegovernor
hasnocontrolovertheenginerpm
whenitisbeingdrivenbythevehicle's
transmission,forexample,onsteep
downgrades.Applyservicebrakesor
shifttoahighergear.
Fueleconomyandengineperformance
arealsodirectlyrelatedtodriving
habits:
•Thebestresultsintriptimeand
fueleconomyareobtainedwhile
drivingthevehicleatasteady
speed.
•Shiftintohigherorlowergears(or
applytheservicebrake)tokeep
enginerpmnearthelowerendof
theoptimumoperatingrange.
•Avoidrapidaccelerationand
braking.

repeatedlyinashortperiodoftime
whilethevehicleismoving.Ex-
tendedglancedurationstoinstru-
mentclusterand/oroverlyfrequent
glancesinsidethevehiclecancause
alossofattentiontothesituationson
theroadwayandvehicle’sroadpo-
sition,whichcouldleadtoanacci-
dentandpossibledeathorpersonal
injuryorequipmentdamage.
