STARTING&OPERATING
CAUTION
Alwaysunplugheaterbeforestarting
theengine.Damagetothecooling
systemcouldoccuriftheheateris
notturnedOFF(unplugged).
Dependingonenginemake,whenthe
temperaturefallsbelow-10°F(-24°
C),theblockheaterisrequired.
•Useasolutionofhalfethylene
glycolantifreezeandhalfwaterfor
bestheaterperformance.Donot
exceed65percentconcentration
ofantifreeze,asashortened
heaterlifewillresult.SeeCooling
SystemMaintenanceonpage
4-56,formoreinformation.
•Afterservicingthecoolingsystem,
operatethevehicleforadayortwo
beforeusingtheheater.Trapped
airinsidetheengineneedstime
toescape.
EngineWarm-up
Engine
Thepurposeofenginewarm-upisto
allowoillmtobeestablishedbetween
pistonsandliners,shaftsandbearings
whileyourenginegraduallyreaches
operatingtemperature.
Warm-upProcedure
1.Afteryou’vestartedyourengine,
idleitatapproximately600RPM
whileyoucheck:
a.oilpressure
b.airpressure
c.alternatoroutput
2.Afterafewminutesofidlingat
600RPM,increaseyouridle
speedto900or1000RPM.
Continueyourwarm-up.This
procedureallowsoiltowarmand
owfreelywhilepistons,liners,
shafts,andbearingsexpand
slowlyandevenly.Inextremely
coldtemperatures,youmayhave
toincreaseidlespeed.
NOTE
Incolderclimateswherethetem-
peratureisoftenbelowfreezing,
thewarm-upforturbochargeden-
ginesisespeciallyimportant.Chilled
externaloillinesleadingtothetur-
bochargerwillslowtheoilowuntil
theoilwarms,reducingoilavailable
forthebearings.Watchtheengine
oiltemperatureorpressuregauge
forawarmingtrendbeforeincreas-
ingengineidlespeed(RPM).
3.Continuetheenginewarm-upuntil
thecoolanttemperaturereaches
atleast130°F(54°C).Atthis
temperature,youcanusepartial
throttle.Waituntilthecoolant
temperatureisatleast160°F(71°
C)beforeoperatingatfullthrottle.
