AXLE
Starting-Up
1.Unlocktheinter-axledifferential
beforestarting.
2.PuttheRangeSelectorinthe
LOWrange.Shiftthetransmission
tostartthevehiclemoving.
3.Whenyouaredrivingonrough
terrainandsecondaryroads,or
underaveryheavyload,keepthe
axleintheLOWrange.Shiftthe
transmissiontomaintainproper
roadspeed.
WARNING
Nevershifttheaxlewhenmoving
downhill.Enginedriveline
disengagementmayoccur,
eliminatingengineretardationand
allowingthewheelstospinfaster
thanthecurrentspeedoftheengine.
Thismayrequireseverebrakingto
slowthevehicledownandcanresult
inanaccident.Failuretocomply
mayresultindeath,personalinjury,
equipmentorpropertydamage.
Propershiftingoftheaxledependson
thesynchronizationofengine/driveline
andwheelspeed.Whenyoushift
theaxle,theconnectionbetweenthe
engineandwheelsismomentarily
disengagedwhilethegearingis
synchronized.Normallywhentheaxle
isshiftedthespeedoftheengine,axle,
andwheelsadjust,allowingforproper
gearengagement.
Whengoingdownhillthewheelswill
notslowdown,butwilltendtospeed
up,whichmakesgearsynchronization
almostimpossible.Asaresult,the
axleisneitherinHIGHnorLOWrange
andallengine/drivelineretardationis
lost.Withoutengineretardationitis
moredifculttoslowthevehicledown
andgreaterstressisputonthebrake
system.
CAUTION
Toavoiddamagingyourvehicleshift
theaxleatslowertravelspeedsuntil
youareusedtodrivingwithadual
rangeaxle.
