OPERATINGTHETRANSMISSION
PuttingtheVehicleinMotion
Aftermakingsurethevehicle'soil
andairpressurearecorrectandall
otherpartsandsystemsareinproper
workingcondition:
1.Fullydepresstheclutchpedal(for
manualtransmission)untilthe
clutchbrakemakescontact.
a.Thetotalstrokeoftheclutch
pedalisabout6inches(152
mm).Therst½inch(13
mm)isfreetravel.Afterthe
freetravelcomestherelease
stroke,whichisthepartthat
fullyreleasestheclutch.The
last½inch(13mm)engages
theclutchbrake.
b.Alwaysstartoutinalow
gear.Startinginhighergears,
evenwithalightload,will
causeaveryjumpystartand
excessivewear.
CAUTION
Alwaysuserstgearoralow
speedrangetostartthevehicle
inmotion.Theuseofahigher
gearorspeedrangeforcesundue
strainontheengine,clutch,other
transmissioncomponents,andmay
causedamage.
2.Evaluatetheroadsurface
conditionsandterrainyourvehicle
ison.Selectagearlowenoughto
letyourvehiclestartforwardwith
thethrottleatidle.
3.Pushtheparkingbrakevalve
handle(Yellow)againstthedash
paneltoreleasethebrakes.
4.Releasetheclutchpedal(manual
only),thengraduallyaccelerateto
permitsmoothstarting,
5.Donotallowyourvehicle
toroll(evenalittle)inthe
oppositedirectionduringclutch
engagement.Ifyouneedto
startuponanincline,applyyour
servicebrakesbeforeyourelease
theparkingbrake.Thenrelease
yourservicebrakesasyouengage
theclutchandapplythrottle.

Ifyouhaveamisalignedgearcondition
inyourvehicle'stransmissionand
cannotstart,graduallyreleasethe
clutch,allowingthedrivegearteethto
lineupproperly.Thenthedrivegear
canrollenoughtoallowtheteethto
lineupproperlyandcompletetheshift.
Thebestengineperformanceand
maximumeconomyisobtainedifgears
areproperlyselected.Thisefciency
isachievedbyalwaysselectinggears
withinoptimumengineRPM,whichis
wheremaximumtorqueandpowerare
