Oil analysis
Some engines
may be equipped with an oil sampling
valve. If oil analysis is required, the oil sampling valve
is used to obtain samples of the engine oil. The oil
analysis wi
ll complement the preventive maintenance
program.
The oil anal
ysis is a diagnostic tool that is used to
determine oil performance and component wear
rates. Contamination can be identified and measured
by using oi
l analysis. The oil analysis includes the
following tests:
•
The Wear Ra
te Analysis monitors the wear of the
engines metals. The amount of wear metal and
type of wear metal that is in the oil is analyzed. The
increase
in the rate of engine wear metal in the
oil is as important as the quantity of engine wear
metal in the oil.
•
Tests are conducted in order to detect
contamination of the oil by water, glycol, or fuel.
•
The Oil Condition Analysis determines the loss of
the oils lubricating properties. An infrared analysis
is used
to compare the properties of new oil to the
properties of the used oil sample. This analysis
allows technicians to determine the amount of
deteri
oration of the oil during use. This analysis
also allows technicians to verif y the performance
oftheoilaccordingtothespecification during the
entir
e oil change interval.

Diesel Fuel Requirements
Perkins is not in a position to continuously evaluate
and monitor all worldwide distillate diesel fuel
specifi
cations that are published by governments and
technological societies.
The Per
kins Specifi cation for Distillate Diesel Fuel
provides a known reliable baseline in order to judge
the expected performance of distillate diesel fuels
that a
re derived from conventional sources.
Satisfactory engine performance is dependent on the
use o
f a good quality fuel. The use of a good quality
fuel will give the following results: long engine life
and acceptable exhaust emissions levels. The fuel
must
meet the minimum requirements that are stated
in the table 19.
