Cooling System Coolant - Change
5. Stop the engine
and allow the engine to cool.
Loosen the cooling system ller cap slowly in
order to relieve any pressure. Remove the cooling
system ller c
ap. Open the drain cock or remove
the drain plug on the engine. Open the drain cock
or remove the drain plug on the radiator. Allow
the water to d
rain. Flush the cooling system with
clean water.
Fill
1. Close the dra
in cock or install the drain plug on the
engine. Close the drain cock or install the drain
plug on the radiator.
NOTICE
Do not ll the cooling system faster than 5 L
(1.3 US gal) per minute to avoid air locks.
Cooling system air locks may result in engine damage.
2. Fill the coo
ling system with Extended Life
Coolant (ELC). Refer to the Operation and
Maintenance Manual, “Fluid Recommendations”
topic (Main
tenance Section) for more information
on cooling system specications. Do not install the
cooling system ller cap.
3. Start and run the engine at low idle. Increase the
engine rpm to high idle. Run the engine at high
idle for on
e minute in order to purge the air from
the cavities of the engine block. Stop the engine.
4. Check the c
oolant level. Maintain the coolant level
within 13 mm (0.5 inch) below the bottom of the
pipe for lling. Maintain the coolant level in the
expansio
n bottle (if equipped) at the correct level.
5. Clean the cooling system ller cap. Inspect the
gasket th
at is on the cooling system ller cap. If
the gasket that is on the cooling system ller cap
is damaged, discard the old cooling system ller
cap and in
stall a new cooling system ller cap. If
the gasket that is on the cooling system ller cap
is not damaged, use a suitable pressurizing pump
in order
to pressure test the cooling system ller
cap. The correct pressure for the cooling system
ller cap is stamped on the face of the cooling
system
ller cap. If the cooling system ller cap
does not retain the correct pressure, install a new
cooling system ller cap.
6. Start the engine. Inspect the cooling system for
leaks and for correct operating temperature.

NOTICE
Do not drain the coolant while the engine is still hot and
the system is under pressure because dangerous hot
coolant can be discharged.
Note: The radiator may not have been provided by
Perkins. The following is a general procedure for
changing the coolant. Refer to the OEM information
for the correct procedure.
1. Ensure that the vehicle is on level ground.
2. Remove the ller cap of the cooling system.
3. Remove the drain plug (1) from the side of the
cylinder block in order to drain the engine. Ensure
that the drain hole is not restricted.
4. Open the radiator drain tap or remove the drain
plug at the bottom of the radiator in order to
drain the radiator. If the radiator does not have a
radiator drain tap or a drain plug, disconnect the
hose at the bottom of the radiator.
5. Flush the coolant system with clean water.
6. Install the drain plugs and close the radiator drain
tap. Install the radiator hose if the radiator hose
was previously removed.
7. Fillthesystemwithanapprovedantifreeze
mixture. The maximum ow rate is 1 L
(0.2200Impgal)perminuteinordertoll the
system. Install the ller cap.
8. Run the engine and check for coolant leaks.
