Troubleshooting Section
Test Step 1. Check for Co nnector
Damage.
A. Turn the circuit breaker for the battery to the OFF
position.
B. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
C. Disconnect th
emainpower.
D. Thoroughly inspect the ECM connectors J1/P1 and
J20/P20. Insp
ect all of the other connectors. Refer
to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting,
“Inspecting Electrical Connectors” for details.
E. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the
wires in the ECM connector that are associated
with the circ
uit.
F. Check the ECM connector (Allen head screw) for
the proper to
rque of 6.0 N·m (55 lb in).
G. Check the customer connector (Allen head
screw) for t
he proper torque of 2.25 ± 0.25 N·m
(20±2lbin).
H. Check the ha
rness and the wiring for abrasion
and pinch points.
Expected Re
sult:
The connectors and wiring should be free of the
following p
roblems: damage, corrosion, abrasion,
and incorrect attachment.
Results:
OK The connectors and the wiring are okay.
Proceed to
test step 2.
Not OK The connectors and/or wiring are not
okay.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or
replace th
e connectors or wiring.
STOP.
Test Step 2. Check the Engine Oil Level
A. Check the e
ngine oil level.
B. Ensure that the correct engine oil dipstick is
installe
d.
C. Check for external oil leaks.
Expected Result:
The engine
oil should be at the correct level.
Results:
OK The engine oil level is correct. Proceed to
test step 3.
Not OK The engine oil level is not correct.
Repair: If nec
essary, add oil to the engine.
STOP.
Test Step 3. U se the Electronic Service
Tool in order to Check the Engine Oil
level.
A. Connect the e
lectronic service tool to the service
tool connector.
B. Turn the keys
witch to the ON position. The engine
should be off.
C. Observe the
“Engine Oil Level” reading on the
electronic service tool.
Expected Re
sult:
The “Engine Oil Level” should read “OK”.
Results:
OK The “Eng
ine Oil Level” does read “OK”.
Repair: Theswitchsignaliscorrect.
STOP.
Not OK The
Engine Oil Level” does not read
“OK”. The switch signal is not correct. Proceed to
test step 4.
Test Step 4. Short the Wires at the Low
Oil Level Switch.
A. Disconnec
t the low oil level switch.
B. Use a wire to short the wires for the “engine oil
level swit
ch”.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. The engine
should be o
ff.
D. Observe the status of the “Engine Oil Level” on
the electr
onic service tool.
E. Remove the wire short.
F. Observe the status of the “Engine Oil Level” on
the electronic service tool.
G. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
