Troubleshooting Section
Test Step 1. Inspect Electrical Connectors
and Wiring
A. Thoroughly inspect the J1/P1 ECM connector and
J20/P20 MIC. Inspect the terminal connections on
the air inlet h
eater relay. Refer to Troubleshooting,
“Electrical Connectors - Inspect” for details.
B. Perform a 45 N
(10 lb) pull test on each of the
wires in the ECM connector that are associated
with the air inlet heater starting aid. Refer to
Illustratio
n 26 and 27.
C. Check the ECM connector (Allen head screw) for
the proper to
rque of 6.0 N·m (55 lb in).
D. Check the harness and wiring for abrasion and for
pinch points
from the sensors back to the ECM.
Expected Result:
All connectors, pins and sockets should be completely
coupled and/or inserted and the harness and wiring
should be fr
ee of corrosion, abrasion or pinch points.
Results:
•
OK – The wiring and the connectors are good.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
•
Not OK – There is a problem with the wiring and
the connectors.
Repair: Perform the following repair:
Repair the
connectors or wiring and/or replace
the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the
seals are properly in place and ensure that the
connector
s are completely coupled.
Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.
STOP.
Test Step 2
. Check the Supply to the
Power Rel
ayfortheAirInletHeater
Starting
Aid
A. Turn the ignition key switch to the ON position.
Refer to
Illustration 25.
B. Measure the resistance between the following
contact
s:
•
A The supply side of the air inlet heater power
relay an
d NEG battery
•
C Positive side of the air inlet heater relay coil
and NEG b
attery
Expected Result:
The battery voltage is correct.
Results:
•
OK – Proceed to Test Step 3.
•
Not OK – There is a problem in the wires between
the battery and the air inlet heater starting aid.
Repair: Check the fuse and wires. Repair the wires
or replace the fuse. Verify that the repairs have
eliminated th
e problem.
STOP.
Test Step 3. Check the Output from the
Power Relay for the Air Inlet Heater
Starting Aid
A. Turn the ign
ition key switch to the ON position.
Refer to Illustration 25.
B. Measure the
voltage between the following
contacts:
•
(B)
•
NEG battery
Expected Result:
The battery
has the proper voltage.
Results:
•
OK – There is a problem in the wires between the
relay and the air inlet heater starting aid.
Repair: Repair the wires or replace the wires.
Verify that the repair has eliminated the problem.
STOP.
•
Not OK – Proc
eedtoTestStep4.
Test Step 4. Ground the Input to the
Power Relay at the MIC
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnec
t P20 connector from the MIC and
connect a 70 pin Breakout T.
C. Connect th
e electronic service tool to the
diagnostic connector.
D. Turn the ke
yswitch to the ON position.
