Using your camera safely Sufficient attention has been paid to the safety of this product but please pay particular attention to the warnings indicated by the following symbols during use. Caution • Do not attempt to disassemble, short, or place batteries in a fire or other high temperature location (above 60°C/140°F). Doing so may cause overheating, fire or explosion. • Do not charge any batteries other than rechargeable lithium-ion battery D-LI68. The battery could explode or catch fire. • Do not place your finger on the flash when it is discharging as there is a risk of burns. • Do not discharge the flash while it is touching your clothing as there is a risk of discoloring.
• If water should happen to get inside the product, consult a PENTAX Service Center. Continuing to use the product can cause a fire or electrical shock. • If thunderstorm should be present during use of the battery charger or AC adapter, unplug the power cord and discontinue use. Care to be Taken During Handling • Take the Worldwide Service Network listing that is included in the package with you when traveling. This will be useful if you experience problems abroad. • When the camera has not been used for a long time, confirm that it is still working properly, particularly prior to taking important pictures (such as at a wedding or during travelling).
• If the camera is subjected to rapid temperature changes, condensation may form on the inside and outside of the camera. Therefore put the camera in a bag or plastic bag, and take the camera out when the difference in temperature has subsided. • Avoid contact with garbage, dirt, sand, dust, water, toxic gases, salt, etc. as this may cause damage to the camera. Data Backup Very occasionally, data stored in the built-in memory becomes unreadable. As a backup measure, we recommend that you transfer important data to a PC or store the data in a medium other than the built-in memory. 1 Getting Started 24 Precautions When Using an SD Memory Card • Make sure that the camera is turned off before opening the battery/card cover. • The SD Memory Card is equipped with a write-protect switch.
Image Size and Quality of Still Pictures 1 Getting Started Select the image size and quality best suited to your purpose. Higher quality levels and numbers of recorded pixels produce clearer images for printing, but the resulting increase in file size reduces the total number of pictures that can be taken. When you select high image quality as well as a large image size, it may take ten seconds or more for the camera to finish recording after shooting.

The flash discharges automatically depending on the light conditions. 1 2 Press the power switch. The camera turns on. Compose the picture on the LCD monitor. The camera AF will focus on the area within the focus frame. Press the zoom button to change the size of the subject.
Pressing the shutter release button Press the shutter release button slowly in two steps. This allows for exact focusing as well as preventing camera shake. Basic way of shutter release 1 Press the shutter release button halfway. 2 2 Confirm the focus frame on the LCD monitor turns green. Hold the shutter release button and wait until the focus frame turns green. The camera is in focus. 3 Quick Start Lightly press the shutter release button until you feel the click on your finger.
Focus lock When you have difficulty in auto focusing on a subject, try the procedures below. 2 Quick Start You may have difficulty in auto focusing on such subjects as: • Subject contrast is very low. (a blue sky, solid white walls, etc.) • Dark places, black objects, or subjects that cannot reflect light. • Areas of strongly reflected light or backlit subjects • Fine patterns • Rapidly moving objects • When a distant object and a close object are both in the focus frame.
Instant Review By default, the image is displayed on the LCD monitor for 0.5 seconds right after shooting (Instant Review). You can change the display time for the Instant Review. To Save the Setting and Begin Playback of Images 6 Press the Q Playback button. The setting is saved and the camera enters the “Playback mode”. To Save the Setting and Continue with Menu Operations 6 Press the OK button or the four-way controller (4). The setting is saved and the screen returns to Step 3. To Cancel the Changes and Continue with Menu Operations Press the MENU button. The changes are canceled and the screen returns to Step 3.

Operating the Mode Palette Press the four-way controller (3) to display the Mode Palette on the LCD monitor. There are two different Mode Palettes, the “Capture Mode Palette” and the “Playback Mode Palette.” You can activate the Capture mode most appropriate for the shooting conditions or edit the taken images just by selecting the icons. Taking Pictures Taking Pictures Changing the Mode In the “Capture mode”, you can take pictures. In the “Playback mode”, you can play back or delete pictures. Take pictures with the camera secured on a tripod or other stable surface. • All the camera buttons function as usual even when the LCD backlight is off. Shutter release button Taking Pictures Using the Shake Reduction Function 4 Taking Pictures “Camera shake” occurs when you jiggle your hands while taking pictures. “Blurring” is likely to occur when you take pictures of moving subject. This camera features image compensation systems and functions that work for both “camera shake” and “blurring”. Enjoy taking still pictures and movies without worrying about image blur. Digital SR mode The mode allows you to set the sensitivity to maximum ISO3200.

When you point the camera at your subject’s face, the camera automatically recognizes it, adjusting focus and exposure to take a high-quality picture. (1p.

Make sure that both the AV equipment and the camera are turned off before connecting the cable. • If you intend to use the camera for a long time, use of the AC adapter kit K-AC63 (optional) is recommended. Refer to the operating manual for the TV or equipment to which the camera is connected. • Images may not be displayed properly depending on the countries or areas when the Video Out setting is the default. In this situation, change the Video Out setting. • While the camera is connected to the TV, the LCD monitor of the camera is turned off.
Setting the Printing Service (DPOF) You can print the images on the SD Memory Card using a DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) compatible printer or at a printing service. Direct Printing Using PictBridge By connecting the camera to a printer that supports PictBridge using the USB cable (I-USB7) supplied with the camera, you can print images directly from the camera without using a PC. Select the images you want to print and the number of copies on the camera after it has been connected to the printer. • We recommend the use of the AC adapter kit K-AC63 (optional) while the camera is connected to the printer.

Editing Images Four-way controller OK button Changing the Image Size and Quality By changing the size and quality of a selected image, you can make the file smaller than the original. You can use this function to continue taking pictures when the card or memory is full, by making the images smaller and overwriting the original images to make more space available in the memory. 6 After changing the size and quality, the image can be saved as a new image or written over the original image.

An error message appears in Step 4. To Register a New Frame To switch to the screen for registering a frame, press the Green button in Step 5. You can register frames which you have downloaded from the internet, etc. When you register a new frame, it replaces one of the existing frames in the built-in memory.
Copying Files Four-way controller OK button You can copy image and sound files from the built-in memory to the SD Memory Card and vice versa. This function can only be selected when a card has been inserted in the camera. When files are copied from the built-in memory to the SD Memory Card, all the files are copied at once. When files are copied from the SD Memory Card to the built-in memory, the files are copied one at a time.
