When you use this camera for the first time, it is recommended you read this Quick Guide first in order to gain a feel for the basic operation of the camera. Refer to the separately supplied “Operating Manual” for further explanation of functions and advanced operations of the camera.
To users of this camera • Do not use or store this camera in the vicinity of equipment that generates strong electromagnetic radiation or magnetic fields. Strong static charges or the magnetic fields produced by equipment such as radio transmitters could interfere with the display, damage the stored data, or affect the camera’s internal circuitry and cause camera misoperation. • The liquid crystal panel used for the display is manufactured using extremely high precision technology.
Using Your Camera Safely We have paid close attention to the safety of this camera. When using this camera, we request your special attention regarding items marked with the following symbols. Warning This symbol indicates that ignoring this item could cause serious personal injuries. Caution This symbol indicates that ignoring this item could cause minor or medium personal injuries, or loss of property. About the Camera Warning • Do not disassemble or modify the camera.
• Should the display be damaged, be careful of glass fragments. Also, be careful not to allow the liquid crystal to get on your skin, in your eyes or mouth. • Depending on your individual factors or physical condition, the use of the camera may cause itching, rashes or blisters. In case of any abnormality, stop using the camera and get medical attention immediately.
• Do not touch or short-circuit the terminal area of the AC plug cord while the cord is plugged in. • Do not handle the power plug with wet hands. This can cause an electric shock. • Do not drop the products, or subject them to violent impact. This can cause them to breakdown. • Do not use the battery charger D-BC106 to charge batteries other than the rechargeable lithium-ion battery D-LI106. Attempting to charge other types of batteries may cause an explosion or heating, or may damage the battery charger.
• Do not short the battery or dispose of the battery in fire. This can cause an explosion or fire. • If any leakage from the battery should come in contact with skin or clothing, it may cause irritation to the skin. Care to be Taken During Handling Before Using Your Camera • When traveling, take the Worldwide Service Network listing that is included in the package. This will be useful if you experience problems abroad. • When the camera has not been used for a long time, confirm that it is still working properly, particularly prior to taking important pictures (such as at a wedding or when traveling). Contents of the recording cannot be guaranteed if recording, playback or transferring your data to a computer, etc.
• The display may appear black at high temperatures, but will return to normal at normal temperatures. • The display may respond more slowly at low temperatures. This is due to liquid crystal properties, and is not a malfunction. • Sudden temperature changes will cause condensation on the inside and outside of the camera. Place the camera in your bag or a plastic bag, and remove it after the temperatures of the camera and surroundings are equalized.
Other Precautions • The SD Memory Card is equipped with a write-protect switch. Setting the switch to LOCK prevents new data from being recorded on the card, the stored data from being deleted, and Write-protect the card from being formatted by the switch camera or computer. r appears on the display when the card is write-protected. • Care should be taken when removing the SD Memory Card immediately after using the camera, as the card may be hot.
• Please note that deleting data, or formatting the SD Memory Cards or the built-in memory does not completely erase the original data. Deleted files can sometimes be recovered using commercially available software. It is user’s responsibility to ensure the privacy of such data.

1 Preparing the Camera for Use Attaching the Lens Cap and Strap Attach the other end of the strap in the same manner. * For instructions, refer to the Operating Manual. Installing the Battery and SD Memory Card Charge the battery before use. Battery SD Memory Card * The SD Memory Cards are sold separately.
2 Turning the Camera On Remove the Lens Cap and Press the Power Button. The camera turns on and is ready to take still pictures. Press the power button again to turn the camera off. Power button Make the Initial Settings. The [Language/u] screen appears when the camera is turned on for the first time. Select the desired language and then set the date and time. 1 On the [Language/u ] screen, use the four-way controller (2345) to select the desired language. 2 Press the 4 button.
Memo If you accidentally select the wrong language and press the 4 button, press the four-way controller (5), use the four-way controller (2345) to select the desired language, and then press the 4 button. The [Initial Setting] screen appears in the selected language. 3 Press the four-way controller (3) to move the frame to [W Hometown].
10 Press the four-way controller (5) to move the frame to [mm/dd/yy], then use the four-way controller (23) to choose the date format. 3 Taking Pictures Once the camera is ready for use, you can start taking pictures. Letting the Camera Choose the Optimal Settings This camera is equipped with a variety of shooting functions. First, try to take pictures using the simplest shooting mode. 1 Set the mode dial to B. In b (Auto Picture) mode, the camera selects the optimal shooting mode for the subject. 2 Frame the subject using the focus frame on the display. 3 Turn the zoom lever to change the captured area.
5 Press the shutter release button fully. The picture is taken. 1/ 60 F8.5 800 37 Taking Pictures According to the Shooting Scene You can choose the appropriate capture mode for your particular situation from the Scene Mode Palette. 1 Set the mode dial to !. 2 Press the M button. Selecting the Flash Mode Slide the flash pop-up lever to pop up the flash, then press the four-way controller (4). Each press of the four-way controller (5) on the Flash Mode selection screen switches modes in the following order. Some modes may be unavailable depending on the capture mode.
Selecting the Drive Mode Press the four-way controller (2). Each press of the four-way controller (5) on the Drive Mode selection screen switches modes in the following order. To select a mode in the box, press the four-way controller (3), then press the four-way controller (5). Selecting the Focus Mode Press the four-way controller (5). Each press of the four-way controller (5) on the Focus Mode selection screen switches modes in the following order. Some modes may be unavailable depending on the capture mode.
Recording Movies 1 Set the mode dial to C. 2 Position the subject on the display, and press the shutter release button halfway. 3 Press the shutter release button fully. Recording starts. 07:34 4 Press the shutter release button again. Recording stops.
4 Playing Back Images You can play back the captured images on the display. 1 Press the Q button after shooting. 100-0001 The image appears on the display. 1/ 1000 F8.5 800 Memo • To play back the previous or next image, press the four-way controller (45). • Turning the e-dial to the left during playback simultaneously displays nine thumbnail images at a time. Turn the e-dial to the left again to switch to the folder display or calendar display.
Memo • You can delete several images selected from the multi-image display. • You can delete all images at once. • You can protect stored images from being accidentally deleted. Selecting a Playback Mode You can choose the playback function you want to use from the Playback Mode Palette. Press the four-way controller (3) while an image is displayed in playback mode. Use the four-way controller (2345) to choose a playback mode, then press the 4 button. Slideshow For continuously playing back images.
