Chapter 8 SAFETY AND WARRANTY This chapter addresses the safety guidelines and precautions to follow when operating your phone. Before operating your phone, please be aware of all the safety details. This chapter contains the terms and conditions of services and the warranty for your phone. Please review them thoroughly.
SAFETY INFORMATION FOR WIRELESS HANDHELD PHONES Read This Information Before Using Your Handheld Portable Cellular Telephone EXPOSURE TO RADIO FREQUENCY SIGNALS Your wireless handheld portable telephone is a low power radio transmitter and receiver. When it is ON, it receives and also sends out radio frequency (RF) signals. In August 1996, the Federal Communications Commissions (FCC) adopted RF exposure guidelines with safety levels for handheld wireless phones.
SAFETY INFORMATION FOR WIRELESS HANDHELD PHONES DRIVING SAFETY Talking on the phone while driving is extremely dangerous and is illegal in some states. Remember, safety comes first. Check the laws and regulations on the use of phones in the areas where you drive. Always obey them. Also, if using your phone while driving, please: l Give full attention to driving. Safe driving is your first responsibility. l Use hands-free operation, if available.
SAFETY INFORMATION FOR WIRELESS HANDHELD PHONES ELECTRONIC DEVICES Most modern electronic equipment is shielded from RF energy. However, certain electronic equipment may not be shielded against the RF signals from your wireless phone. PACEMAKERS The Health Industry Manufacturers Association recommends that a minimum separation of six (6”) inches be maintained between a handheld wireless phone and a pacemaker to avoid potential interference with the pacemaker.
SAFETY INFORMATION FOR WIRELESS HANDHELD PHONES OTHER SAFETY GUIDELINES AIRCRAFT FCC and Transport Canada Regulations prohibit using your phone while in the air. Turn your phone OFF before boarding an aircraft. BLASTING AREAS To avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn your phone OFF when in a “blasting area” or in areas posted: “Turn off two-way radio.” Obey all signs and instructions.
SAFETY INFORMATION FOR WIRELESS HANDHELD PHONES PRECAUTIONS Your Handheld Portable Telephone is a high quality piece of equipment. Before operating, read all instructions and cautionary markings on (1) AC Adaptor (2) Battery and (3) Product Using Battery. DO NOT use this equipment in an extreme environment where high temperature or high humidity exists. DO NOT abuse the equipment. Avoid striking, shaking or shocking. When not using, lay down the unit to avoid possible damage due to instability.
SAFETY INFORMATION FOR FCC RF EXPOSURE WARNING! Read this Information before using CAUTIONS In August 1996 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States with its action in Report and Order FCC 96-326 adopted an updated safety standard for human exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic energy emitted by FCC regulated transmitters. Those guidelines are consistent with the safety standard previously set by both U.S. and international standards bodies.
SAR INFORMATION THIS MODEL PHONE MEETS THE GOVERNMENT’S REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVES. Your wireless phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured not to exceed the emission limits for exposure to radiofrequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission of the U.S. Government. These limits are part of comprehensive guidelines and establish permitted levels of RF energy for the general population.
SAR INFORMATION Additional information on Specific Absorption Rates (SAR) can be found on the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Asso-ciation (CTIA) website at http://www.wow-com.com. * In the United States and Canada, the SAR limit for mobile phones used by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/kg) averaged over one gram of tissue. The standard incorporates a sub-stantial margin of safety to give additional protection for the public and to account for any variations in measurements.
FCC HEARING-AID COMPATIBILITY (HAC) REGULATIONS FOR WIRELESS DEVICES On July 10, 2003, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Report and Order in WT Docket 01-309 modified the exception of wireless phones under the Hearing Aid Compatibility Act of 1988 (HAC Act) to require digital wireless phones be compatible with hearing-aids. The intent of the HAC Act is to ensure reasonable access to telecommunications services for persons with hearing disabilities.
FCC HEARING-AID COMPATIBILITY (HAC) REGULATIONS FOR WIRELESS DEVICES In the above example, if a hearing aid meets the M2 level rating and the wireless phone meets the M3 level rating, the sum of the two values equal M5. This should provide the hearing aid user with “normal usage” while using their hearing aid with the particular wireless phone. “Normal usage” in this context is defined as a signal quality that is acceptable for normal operation. The M mark is intended to be synonymous with the U mark.
FDA CONSUMER UPDATE U.S. Food and Drug Administration -Center for Devices and Radiological Health Consumer Update on Wireless Phones 1. Do wireless phones pose a health hazard? The available scientific evidence does not show that any health problems are associated with using wireless phones. There is no proof, however, that wireless phones are absolutely safe. Wireless phones emit low levels of radiofrequency energy (RF) in the microwave range while being used.
FDA CONSUMER UPDATE These types of wireless phones can expose the user to measurable radiofrequency energy (RF) because of the short distance between the phone and the user’s head. These RF exposures are limited by Federal Communications Commission safety guidelines that were developed with the advice of FDA and other federal health and safety agencies.
FDA CONSUMER UPDATE The Project has also helped develop a series of public information documents on EMF issues. FDA and the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) have a formal Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to do research on wireless phone safety. FDA provides the scientific oversight, obtaining input from experts in government, industry, and academic organizations. CTIA-funded research is conducted through contracts to independent investigators.
FDA CONSUMER UPDATE Again, the scientific data do not demonstrate that wireless phones are harmful. But if you are concerned about the RF exposure from these products, you can use measures like those described above to reduce your RF exposure from wireless phone use. 10. What about children using wireless phones? The scientific evidence does not show a danger to users of wireless phones, including children and teenagers.
PROTECT YOUR WARRANTY Read your Warranty carefully, with the special consideration to paragraph seven of the Limited Warranty for your unit. “Warranty does not apply to... or to any product or part thereof which has suffered through alteration... mishandling misuse, neglect or accident”. Many companies are making look alike accessories and in some cases, promoting that their product is equal to or better than the Pantech product. Be careful.
12 MONTH LIMITED WARRANTY Pantech Personal Communications (the Company) warrants to the original retail purchaser of this Audiovox handheld portable cellular telephone, that should this product or any part thereof during normal consumer usage and conditions, be proven defective in material or workmanship that results in product failure within the first twelve (12) month period from the date of purchase, such defect(s) will be repaired or replaced (with new or rebuilt parts) at the Company’s option, without
12 MONTH LIMITED WARRANTY personal information or memory data contained in, stored on, or integrated with any wireless device, whether under warranty or not, returned to Pantech Personal Communications for repair or service. To obtain repairs or replacement within the terms of this Warranty, the product should be delivered with proof of Warranty coverage (e.g.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY INFORMATION OPERATING ENVIRONMENT Your phone and its enhancements may contain small parts. Keep them out of the reach of small children. Remember to follow any special regulations in force in any area and always switch off your phone when its use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger. Use the phone only in its normal operating positions. This phone meets RF exposure guidelines when used either in the normal use position against the ear or when positioned at least 2.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY INFORMATION l Not carry the phone in a breast pocket. l Hold the phone to the ear opposite the pacemaker to minimize the potential for interference. If you suspect interference, switch off your phone and move the phone away. HEARING AIDS Some digital wireless devices may interfere with some hearing aids. If interference occurs, consult your service provider.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY INFORMATION POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIVE ENVIRONMENTS Switch off your phone when in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere and obey all signs and instructions. ADDITIONAL SAFETY INFORMATION CERTIFICATION INFORMATION (SAR) THIS MOBILE DEVICE MEETS GUIDELINES FOR EXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVES. Your mobile device is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed not to exceed the limits for exposure to radio waves recommended by international guidelines. These guidelines were developed by the independent scientific organization ICNIRP and include safety margins designed to assure the protection of all persons, regardless of age and health.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY INFORMATION HEARING AID COMPATIBILITY (HAC) Your mobile device model complies with FCC rules governing hearing aid compatibility. These rules require an M3 microphone or higher value. The M-value, shown on the device box, refers to lower radio frequency (RF) emissions. A higher M-value generally indicates that a device model has a lower RF emissions level, which may improve the likelihood that the device will operate with certain hearing aids.
